Overthinking cold weather oil for Tahoe & Yukon?

Ok, on second thought... How much would I gain by going to a 0w20 instead of a 0w30 for short drives? I'm thinking of putting in a block heater even though it's going to be in a garage, if only to pre-heat the oil somewhat during start. Thoughts?

Checker Auto sale on Mobil 1 & Castrol

$29.99/case for any weight Mobil 1, or the Castrol synthetic. Not a tremendous price drop but they told me they will case-price six individual quarts of whatever weight you want. So, if you want a weight that doesn't come in the 5-quart jugs, it could be an option for you.

Overthinking cold weather oil for Tahoe & Yukon?

I think I'd prefer to go with an oil pan heater on the Tiger as I'd be concerned about a fire with an exposed halogen bulb. Well, I guess that solves it. If I can find 0w20 when I get back up to MN, then I'll switch over in the Tahoe. Regarding the Yukon, I'm still on the fence, but at a...

    Suspension bushing

Good timely thread for me. I need to replace the rear bump stops on my Tahoe as a recent long-distance towing experience did a number on them. I also replaced the shocks with some that have a spring coil over them for extra suspension. The fronts should be OK, but the rears are absolutely...

Overthinking cold weather oil for Tahoe & Yukon?

Thanks for the words. I've spent the last few years in Utah, but we just moved to Duluth as I got a new job out there. We love it, but a requirement for the job meant coming to Phoenix for two and a half months for requalification training. I'm very happy with both of these engines, in...

Overthinking cold weather oil for Tahoe & Yukon?

I have a 1996 4x4 Tahoe w/the 5.7 Vortec as my beater truck for my short commute to work, 137k miles (or so). My wife is driving the 2001 4x4 Yukon w/the 5.3, just turned 100k miles. I intend to keep the Yukon for many, many years as it's the perfect vehicle for me, and I really like having a...

    Here are some... filter questions!

Still running the short filter, although I changed over to Mobil 1 10w30 for my oil. I plan on driving this car very, very little.

    Here are some... filter questions!

Between the move, the oil stains in my friend's garage, and having to get this car onto a trailer to move it, I'll be focusing on the "must-do" stuff first. Problem is, this car is really close to original, and while I'm not really adverse to updating some things (like my radiator and fan) I'm...

    Here are some... filter questions!

That seems like a better setup than the rigid brass tube setup that the car came with, but for now I'm going to wait to do anything beyond install the short filter. Thanks.

    Here are some... filter questions!

Thanks, it is indeed a Renault filter, you have to be careful though as they went to metric threads around the latter half of 1984 I believe. I haven't removed the unit yet to really get an idea of where it failed this time (it failed 30 years ago on the top of the filter, they brazed or welded...

Very true, very true. Lord knows I'll need the $$$ for something else on this car!

    Here are some... filter questions!

Ha! Thanks, I figured that between low miles, easy driving and modern filters I'd be OK but it might be a good project to restore the remote system. One day...

    Here are some... filter questions!

Thanks for the replies. If/when I swap over to the 90-degree setup, I'll go MC or Mobil 1 for filters then based on your recommendations. That seems to jive with what I've been told. Stuart, I'm with you, maybe it's all in my head but I guess I'd prefer to use the larger filter with more media...
