i use oversized filters in all the cars i service at my house so looking it up in the book at the store is of no use to me.

Yes, they are a good deal and a good filter (made by Wix as is the Castrol MaxPro), but you'd better grab 'em while you can because it looks like K-mart is clearing their shelves of pretty much everything but Fram. [Frown]

Penske/Castrol/Pennzoil/Fram filters around here are mostly made by Allied Signal and not Wix.

C'mon guys, just compare the filters side by side and notice that the only difference is the paint job. Feel free to cut some open. Most of these filters are visually identical.

I am not saying that they all are made by the same company or that all store locations choose the same supplier.
But, I am saying that it would be poor to assume that someone hints that it is made by Wix and that all are. Not the case.

What vehicles are these filters for?????
Most people try to crossreference thread size and compare different filter numbers. Others, who work at quicklube places, tend to notice what certain automakers use. Some filters are smaller to save money or to make changing easier between same engines used in different cars.

Both the L14459 and L14620 share the same Fram part numbers and other than size, are probably interchageable. I have used the L24458(1988 Honda Accord filters) in place of the L14620(most new Nissans).

I don't think there are too many filters bigger than the L40017. This filter shares the same thread as the Fram PH8A/Fram HP1.....

I use Fram as examples(but not in my car) because they are popular and one of the easiest filters to cross reference with other brands of filters. Try flipping through the catalogues at the car parts stores.

PL 14620 Just look up the application for a 2000 Maxima. If the Penske is the same # as Fram its 7317, K&N HP 1010, Mobil 1 1-110

*sigh* I think this makes about the third time I've posted this link in answer to the question 'who makes Penske and Castrol filters?'. Allied Signal - now Honeywell - likely/probably/supposedly/reportedly manufacture Fram and Penzoil filters; but the Penske's and MaxPro's are a Wix product. </rant> [Big Grin]

Yep, its still true. Watch out for old inventory being roled out. The most recent Kmart that closed(a year ago) had non-Wix filters.
The two Kmarts that just announced closings have the Wix Penske/Castrol filters, but a horrible selection. I haven't shopped at the Kmart in years since competitors have moved in. Also, haven't used the Fram or its clones and rarely do I check to see if suppliers change(as noted in the trusty Dana financial statements in 1999) for certain brands.

So, I stand corrected. Be careful since Penske has been around since 1995-6? and not so busy Kmarts might have old stock hanging around.

I've purchased Penske/Wix filters from K-mart for the past 3 years. They only started to clear their shelves since last summer. [Frown]

Fram filters are CONSIDERABLY lighter than other filters.

I still have a few Penske oil filters in my storage - but its mostly SuperTech now.

I just cut open a Castrol, Penske, and a Wix. The Castrol and Penske were from Kmart, the Wix from a local parts store. I don't have the filter numbers in front of me, but, the Castrol and penske filters were xx3600's, and the Wix was a 51516.
The Cast, and Pen I cut open were deninitely made by Wix. All three filters looked the same. All had the same bypass design-the bypass rests on the filter, and comes off when the filter is cut open. The tube had a spiral design. The Wix filter was for a different car. There was a spring/metal device blocking the view into the tube. The pleats were the of the same spacing and depth BUT--It looked to me that the C,P filters were very old. The paper media was brittle. I gripped the Wix, and, with my thumb, I pulled the paper to the side. The media of the castrol and penske both ripped. The media also looked yellowish. The Wix did not tear, and the media looked white. Perhaps this is how Wix sells there surplus stock. Kmart charged $3.50 for each. I will spend an extra 2 bucks and buy a "new" Wix at the parts store. After seeing this, I don't feel comfortable using a Castrol, or Penske from Kmart. Especially for extended drains-not even 6 months.

Good post Toycor. Brings up a good question. How long is the shelf life of a oil filter?

In the car with oil in it? Or on the shelf? On the shelf I would imagine it would be good for 10 years, on the car, maybe a year or two tops.
