My college roommate thought that car batteries are filled with just water as that is what we add to them (as he held his battery almost upside down before charging it in our apartment).

As a boy we were jumping the neighbors car to start it and the wife said pointing the the six battery caps (back then), "Are those the spark plugs?"

My sister once told me proundly that she had changed her car oil herself. I almost fell over. Then I realized that she ment she was so pround that she had checked the oil level for the first time in her life.

Got any funny ones?

No oil on dipstick means no oil whatsoever within engine.

A guy once told me, "I rebuilt this engine myself, and the oil pressure is so high, it blows the dipstick out!"

I heard a girl talking to her father about buying a Toyota Corolla FX-16. Her dad had asked her what was so great about it. "I don't know," she said. "The salesman just said it has fourteen valves."

I had an uncle that swore up and down that changing ones oil was a scam. He reasoned that oil sat in the ground for millions of years and didnít go bad so it must not go bad in an engine. He would argue about it for hours if you let him.

That isn't so uncommon. I have seen the same thing said here on BITOG with respect to valve cover gaskets.

I've also seen someone claim that sludge accumulation or movement in an engine caused the oil level to change(to the tune of half a quart).

I probably have tons but I can think of a few.

Once a guy was telling me about his buddy's twin turbo S4, and he said it was so fast, and the second turbo hadn't even kicked in yet when they were driving it.
Obviously not knowing a thing about how they work. I chuckled.

I've seen people say when they put new transmission fluid in that they want to believe is the nectar of the gods, the transmission even revs lower on the highway, its so smooth!
LOL!

I helped my friend change the front wheel bearings on her Sunfire a few years ago, and she asked if the rear had bearings too. smile

I remember once a totally car illiterate guy I worked with bought a Grand Am, would have been late 90's model or maybe 2000, he said it had a V6. I got a ride in it once and as soon as it started and ran it was very obvious it was definitely a 4 cylinder. I did not bother to say anything.

Fun times!

I once knew a guy who just bought a new Eclipse.

"Congrats, very nice car. But no interest in the AWD model?"

"It is AWD. The dealer told me."

I motioned him to look under the car and see for himself the lack of a diff and drive axles.

I bought my mom a then new '94 Ford. I dropped it off with her after a few test drives, and headed back to Austin.

Couple days later she calls up and asks about the "blue squid" in the instrument cluster. Wha?

She said it comes on in the morning when she drives it to work, but in the afternoon it isn't on. I am kind of stumped.

A little later I was at work and in the morning, a winter morning when it was still dark, I started up a Town Car, and sure enough, a blue squid (the high beam indicator). I had never paid attention to that before.....ever. Mom had her autolamps on, and never drove at night. She had no clue as to what autolamps were. Every morning the blue squid would greet her as her lights were on.

Girl I know managed to buy a brand new Chevrolet Cobalt that surprisingly did not have air conditioning as standard equipment. She asked the dealer if they could install it, so they told her to get some estimates for an aftermarket system and they will install it for her.

Overheard once when I was in college. Girl telling her guy friends that she's getting this funny smell inside her car, the windows are fogging up, and the floor is getting wet. "Oh, you'll have to get the Freon recharged, probably switch over to that R-134 stuff.".

Honest to goodness, I had a teacher tell me once that his Pontiac's brights symbol on the dash was an Indian chief head with feathers as an homage to Chief Pontiac. I said "No, it's not, it's a lamp with beams coming off of it!" The look on his face was freaking priceless. Kazaa!!!

(compared to 87 pump gas)premium (high octane pump gas) burns slower, thus the carbon accumulation in your engine.

Surprisingly yes. He drove what had to have been some of the toughest iron Detroit has ever stamped. When the 350 in his Caprice Wagon finally decided to give up he made some disparaging comment about what a piece of junk it was. I remember distinctly my father making a very disgusted sigh at the comment.

When that car died he had put about 75000 miles on it. Having known him I highly doubt he ever put anything but gas in it. It might have had a free oil change or two but it certainly never had one he paid for.

I don't know how much I paid, but my payment is only $150

I worked as a pump jockey in the early 80's and I remember a lady who drove a Cadillac Seville. One day, she came in driving a new Jaguar XJ-6. "Check the oil?" I asked. No, it's a new car. This went on for a couple of months, and she finally let me check the oil. 2 qts. low. Boy, was she censored off.

The first vehicle I ever bought was a '65 GMC pickup. The previous owner told me, "Don't use that detergent oil - it gets too thin."

After reading these posts, it seems if you do a classified search for a "v4 honda civic" you just might get a good car that some kid hasn't molested.

"You're going to ruin your car! These run on diesel!" - said to me by an old man who sprinted across the gas station lot and threw his hands over the gas filler on my '67 Beetle to prevent me from ruining it by filling it with gasoline.

"Dual overhead cam engines have about twice the rated horsepower because it takes at least 150-200 lbs of torque to turn the cams." - said to my cousin by the "mechanic" who "fixed" his old Scirocco.

"You multiply liters by 100 to get the cubic inches." - my high school auto teacher ... and he was completely serious.

"My car has REALLY high mileage on it, almost 50,000." - said to me by a little old lady who wanted to know if she needed high mileage oil.

"Lincoln has nothing to do with Ford! It's a whole different car company! There never was a Lincoln that had Ford running gears, ever!" - said to me by an old man. I forget the context.

Something electrical is not working so they state it must be the fuse.

My wife's coworker berating her Jeep Cherokee for how horrible it is in the snow. I look at the vehicle and notice lack of front differential. Honestly why Jeep put their name on anything with 2wd is beyond me. I felt bad because this was a loaded up used SUV she got for the snow. Apparently the next dealer did not catch this on trade in and gave her good money for it.

I had someone argue with me that they needed a jumpstart because their car wouldn't start.

It was cranking over at full speed.

From a lady that owned an older Aerostar with the electronic dash.
"and when I press this button (show/zoom 1/4 fuel level) I get more gas."

My great uncle always stopped after a few miles to let the tires cool off (70's Datsun pickup).

I stopped to help a couple of guys on the side of a freeway. One said he just put some oil in the car and it started acting up. He didn't think he put in enough and wanted a ride to get more.. Not being familiar with the car I asked where the dipstick was.
"Dipstick?" he replied.
I asked how did he know it wasn't enough.
"I keep putting it in this opening that says OIL but It's still not full. I must have a leak"
He sure had a few by then. I found the dipstick (the one under the hood) and told him how it works. I drained about 4 quarts out and amazingly the motor started but it ran bad. As I quickly walked back to my truck before I peed myself I heard him say, "My brother is not going to be happy."

After my mother got a new set of tires, "My engine runs smoother."

Car is cranking fine but won't start. "I think the bendix is broke" A little knowledge can be bad.

I was riding with someone and they kept riding the brakes. I asked why and she said the Shell commercial said to do that to keep them dry. It was 72F and sunny.

"It's jacked up in the back to make it go faster because it's always going downhill."

"I put racing oil in and now it has 30 more horsepower."

"Bugs on the windshield reduces MPG by 20%."

"I put the A/C on to cool off the motor but I got chilly so I rolled down the windows."

"They'll never catch on." circa 1905

Sure enough, he had a brake line almost rusted through and leaking. Even talked him into fixing it pronto.

My dad got accosted the same way in his 1940 Ford Flathead, except the guy thought it needed 100+ octane. Nope, that engine was actually engineered to run on truly awful fuel (and rebuilt to run on unleaded.)

I have a client with a '93 F-150 that he claims has "the 380 HP Lightning motor".

He has a 351. It's not the 240hp 351W Lightning. It doesn't have the extruded aluminum Lightning intake. Looks like a regular 351W. It's certainly not the supercharged 380HP 5.4.

Some of these are really funny, LOL!

I knew a lady who once owned an 80's Toyota Cressida, not sure of the year but somewhere around '83. She said she had NEVER changed the oil in that car since it was new, and it ran almost 120K miles until the oil light came on. I think she added oil at that time but the engine was already toast. She said that's what the oil light was for, to tell you when you needed to add oil, right?

Whatever her deal was, if this story is true it's a real testimony to Toyota engineering - a car that lasted over 100K miles on the original oil that came from the factory!

Wow. I know some manufacturers insist on leaving their break in oil in until the oil life monitor tells you to change it but this is ridiculous.

I have a client that has a Freestar that she uses as a Pilot car for oversize load semis.

She will not get her oil changed because she is embarrassed that she has a breathalyzer.

It's been over two years. Her Duratec 30 is noisy but it still runs.

Back when Ford first added traction control to the Mustang GT's, I was on the dealer lot looking at cars with my mom and I was nosing around at the Mustangs when one of the salesmen came out. Proceded to tell me what a great car they were and that you could now get them with AWD. I told my mom, "lets go." I figured he had traction control confused with AWD. Its sad when a kid in high school knows more about the cars on the dealer lot than the salesmen themselves.

Also common. I remembered this happening all the time as a kid when I went with my dad when he went car shopping.

I recall a couple of years back there was a co-worker trying to get his Cherokee started.
He had the hood up, so I wandered over.
The thing was cranking over just fine, but he was solicting a jump.
I told him that a jump wasn't going to help him, since the engine was cranking healthily.
Another genius went to get his car, to give the Cherokee owner a jump.
The thing sat for a couple of days and then left on a hook for repair.

I stopped to help a girl on the side of the road, near where I live, that had her hood up. I don't know how she initially knew but she said she was low on oil. I checked it and none showed on the dipstick. I said I had some oil with me and I would be glad to give it to her. She said is it Pensoil? I said no but it would be way better than driving the car so low on oil. She would not beleive me and drove off without letting me add oil.

A friend of mine insisted he'd never own a front-wheel-drive car. No way! Not a chance! He was quite specific. So I had to ask him why he made an exception for his Olds Alero. He looked at me as though I was just a minor annoyance and told me the Alero is not front-wheel-drive.

I made him pop the hood so I could point out the CV axles, just like every other front-wheel-drive car has.

He's done all right with the Alero though. Last I heard its almost to 200K miles.

Ha!

I used the mark-and-match method when I changed the belt/tensioner/water pump on my girlfriend's Beetle. It worked perfectly.

It may not work on every engine, but it does work on some.

While I was in college, I worked in the maintenance department of a US Forest service office. A few of the gems I heard:

1. Spark plugs never wear out.

2. You should NEVER put distilled H20 in a battery because the minerals in tap H20 keep it charged.

3. One day at lunch, this same Gentleman asked me where my car was. Told him it was in the shop having brake pads changed. He asked how many miles were on the car, I told him 50K. He went on a tirade about how brakes should last longer than that and his Chevy van had 150k on the original brakes. I then asked him how many transmissions it had in it (he would back into his pkg. space every day using his transmission as the means to stop the van.) His answer: 3.

Every time something goes wrong with someone's car in these parts, they automatically blame the "alternator".

My dad would always say "my car was making funny noises and suddenly died on the road, I'm thinking it's the alternator" or "that car went to the junkyard, it was probably the alternator". When my Bravada took a [censored] while I was driving it, he said "it must be the alternator".

I soon learned that the alternator was obviously an electrical problem and had nothing to do with the engine.

A lady was talking to me a few months ago about her car that was stuck in a shop. She was rather hysterical and emotional, but I heard her story out and she kept saying it was the alternator and I asked her what EXACTLY happened. She says the car turns over but won't go into gear. I said that's a transmission failure. I asked her if she had any problems turning the car over and keeping it running. She said it runs fine but it won't go anywhere, it won't drive or reverse. I told her again, it's a transmission problem - have you had the transmission serviced lately? And she continues her story, "...so anyways, the alternator is bad..."

Really...? crzy

Ignorance is rampant in our society and that's the fact.

Fact and truth is very rare these days for too many lazy people chose not to think logically and seek the truth, but instead: find casual victim(s) to lay blame on, and then moved on.

That's why this board (as well as internet) is littered with lots of half-truths, and house-wifey's tale (some even to the extent of being horse-pucky).

My 2c's worth.

And I have a friend that always comments on how Dodge made engines and things and secretly sold them to the Nazi's during WWII because it was profitable.

Not sure how he figures that one but I always find it kinda hilarious.

Ford did own shares of Cummins for quite some time, but they were bought back by Cummins in the 90's.

You don't need to change the oil on this car...but you need to push this button on the speedometer and hold it in so the yellow oil light goes out a couple of times a year...

as told by a woman who had 41,000 miles on her Toyota Corolla with the factory oil still in it.

My Dad never drains the oil he just changes the oil filter every year and adds oil when it is low. That way the new filter screens out all of the dirt in the oil.

This car was yet another "crude oil discovery" once the drain bolt was unleashed.

Another good one is when people exaggerate or completely misrepresent what's wrong.

Knew a girl whose tie rod broke. Not hard to spot, wheel turns in at an extreme angle and you go nowhere fast. In her mind, the wheel fell off, and that's what she told folks.

I take excellent care of my car...I have the oil changed every 3-4,000 miles.

Meanwhile these same people ignore power steering fluid, brake fluid, PCV, air filters, cabin filters, transmission service, spark plugs, fuel filter, hoses, serpentine belt, etc.

Okay, I debated whether or not to put this one on here but here goes. Keep in mind I am still working on this woman and she is much better now.
My wife once questioned when I told her that I was going to change the oil in her car and rotate the tires "arent the tires already rotating as you drive?"

She was riding with her ex boss somewhere and noticed that her brakes were screeching when she applied them (ex boss car), she mentioned this to me when she got home that night and I told her that the brake pads probably needed replacing. She relayed this to her boss and was told that the fluid was still full so the brakes were still good.
I ended up changing these pads out a few months later guys, along with a caliper (yes the piston fell out), 2 rotors and 2 sets of brake pads. I did that as a "parts only, thank you" job and felt that it was my duty to keep the people that share the roads safe.

"I bought my car because it's a driver's car."

Usually in reference to something like a BRZ/FR-S or 3-series.

Of course, this is said by someone who has no intention of ever taking the vehicle to a track-day event or autocross and lives in a state like Michigan, where "corners" exist only on highway on-ramps.

"I don't know how to put air in my tires." Really?! Who didn't have a bike when they were a kid and learned how to do this.

I even heard a bit on one of the local radio stations in the area that one of the DJ's didn't do an oil change in 125k miles and the mechanic asked her if an oil change was done, and she said that all she did was top off her oil with a 5qt jug!!! All 5qts! crackmeup

My eyes watered, I was laughing so much! I have one similar from when I bought my A6 in 2008.

The salesman was trying really hard to impress me by telling me that the 2.7 is a twin turbo engine (same as the S4 you referenced), and when you step on the gas a little it will activate one of the turbos. If you needed to really step on it, it would then fire up the second turbo so the air would be comprssed a second time. He thought they were in series and the second one would add to the psi from the first.

To be fair, sequential twins have been done, although they don't work quite like the guy described. The Audi 2.7, however, has parallel twins.

OK, I'll tell one on myself here! Keep in mind that I was an 8 or 9 year old kid at the time and I've learned a little about cars since then, along with perhaps being a bit more honest, LOL.

At the time (early '70's), our family owned a '69 Ford Galaxie two door sedan with the 302 cubic inch V8. Once I lied through my teeth to my neighbor friend (a boy about the same age as me) that it had a 461 cubic inch V8 and backed up my "claim" by pointing to the numbers "461" that were part of the VIN under the front window glass! I did that because his dad had a mid '60's Thunderbird with the 390 cu. in V8 and I didn't want to have to admit that our car had less displacement (and hence, less horsepower) than his! Kinda funny what you remember doing as a kid sometimes...

Saab did make a little sports car (the Sonnett ?) and a few other models with a V-4 engine in them in the late 60's.
I'll bet the owners saab'd every time they needed parts for them, just like modern Saabs.

someone's low oil light came on.
she asked her coworkers about it, and was told that most cars took 5qts of oil.
so --blindly assuming that her car was OUT of oil, which it was not-- she topped it off with 5 qts!

We emptied 12 qts out of that car, it was meant to take about 7.

Had someone at autozone try to tell me that my camry did not HAVE rear wheel bearings, maybe it was an option?
I went to advance instead... they found the bearing in their computer.

coworker got a car with all 4 tpms sensors showing faulty. he replaced all 4. of course, it turned out to be a CEM software concern that caused it to lose communication with all 4, and he'd wasted his time smile

When I was in high school I got a ride with a friend once. His Dodge 3/4 ton, with 318, started rattling something fierce at some point. He got out and dumped in 5 qt of oil. ! I told him that, perhaps, he ought to put oil in a bit more often. He said why? Been doing that for 10 or 20 thousand miles...

Everybody tell me I'm going to wash the paint off my cars. I have to grit my teeth and bite my tongue every time one of my neighbors says that to me. It drives me up the wall! Leave me alone and MYOB!! Your car isn't next either!

I haven't talked to my neighbor in a few weeks due to it being cold. He doesn't come outside much in the winter. I haven't hand washed a car in close to a month due to the weather. First thing out of the neighbors mouth is "It's too cold to wash the car. You're going to wash the paint off that thing. You wash that car every day don't you?"

ARRRGGGGGHHHHH! Has anyone ever successfully washed the paint off a car?? I wish my wife and I had moved to where we have WAY less neighbors than now. She doesn't go outside much so she never has to listen to this [censored]. She also grew up with neighbors all around her unlike me.

I always try to be nice, but I'm about sick of the comments. I guess I'm going to have to resort to washing my vehicles inside the garage with waterless or rinseless washes so I don't have to listen to this mess anymore.

i've washed paint off before.... GM had issues with certain colors in the late 80s-late 90s... i believe it had something to do with water based primer not reacting well with the base coat and clear coat?

either way, the clear tends to flake off, then the basecoat soon after, in hilariously large chunks. sometimes you can get the clear and color to come off at the same time, so you don't even expect it.

I hope I don't get any flack from this post, for being my first one and all, but I hear some very amusing if not questionable logic from WalMart customers just about every day I'm there. (Yes, I'm a TLE employee at WalMart, it's paying for school)

One woman who brought her '09 Silverado to us for an oil change and it had been discovered that the transmission was over filled by nearly 3 quarts while running the truck to check for leaks. After reading through the full disclosure of her vehicle's condition especially regarding the transmission fluid level at the register, her response was, "I didn't even know I had one of those!"

Another employee at our store not assigned in TLE (for good reason) also thought that engine displacement was equal to the amount of oil it needed, and that our reference guides were wrong. I'm glad he's gone.

Yeah! The Cold air intake adds 15 hp, header adds 30hp, exhaust adds another 15 hp, Iridium plugs add 20 hp, Nology wires make 100 hp, red wrinkle painted valve cover is 95 hp, JDM bumber(sic) pole is another 75hp and the JDM terry cloth wristbands around the brake master cylinder is another 25 hp.

Ah, selective ignorance. You see that a lot these days, eh?

How about the "I follow this one particular traffic law to the letter, and you should too!" What about the other laws? They seem to get selectively ignored!

Saab did make a little sports car (the Sonnett ?) and a few other models with a V-4 engine in them in the late 60's.
I'll bet the owners saab'd every time they needed parts for them, just like modern Saabs.

The Saab engine was a Ford, they built and used lots of V4 engines in Europe.
There are still huge parts inventories for these engines as some are still used in industrial applications.

Pepboys did that here on a scout

As did Walmart somewhere.

While I was working at Wally, draining the transmission instead of the oil happened about every 6 months or so. Usually always on Subarus. They finally got smart and started not allowing new techs under them without supervision from the bay manager or a certain few techs like me. There is a training period, of course, but its based off of what happens to come in. If no Subarus come in while they are being trained, they would end up "certified" and still make this simple mistake.

Ive heard so much stupid stuff about cars, its unbelievable. I cant hardly remember it all.
I remember more stupid stuff about diesels for some reason.
I had a guy come in once with a brand new top of the line F350 with the 6.4L Diesel.
He wanted regular Mobil 1 10W30. He absolutely insisted it was the correct oil. I tried to move him towards RTS and he wouldnt budge. I wanted to refuse to do the service and shop management agreed. So he complained to store management and they folded like a wet paper sack so it ended up being done.
Had essentially the same thing occur with a mid-90s Dodge Cummins, except he was wanting our bulk QS 10W30. When I tried to steer him to Rotella or Delo, he became very agitated and stated they were a ripoff.
Did a GM 6.6L diesel for someone who hadnt owned a diesel before. After he paid, he went out and checked the oil. He became agitated that we didnt change his oil when he paid all this money. Of course it was done, but anyone with any diesel experience (EGR diesels especially) knows the oil goes dark as soon as you pour it in. He finally left, unhappy. He came back a bit later saying he had been by another quick lube and they told him that the oil hadnt been changed. Mgmt ended up capitulating and we did another oil change while he watched. After it was started up for the pressure check, my boss pulled the dipstick and took it over to him. Black as tar. He was unfazed.

Actually, some diesels DID call for 10W-30, including the Rams. Not so much now, but that was, indeed, the case.

10W30 SM/CF, though? The Dodge would have been a CG-4 or CH-4 oil and the Ford a CJ-4, I would think.

Recently while shopping for our new truck we were checking out the Chevy Duramax diesels. While we were test driving my wife asked where to put the DEF fluid. She was curious because the Ford has the fill right next to the fuel inlet. The salesman said "that is the beauty of the GM system vs the Ford system. With GM you just add the fluid in with the diesel when the light comes on." My wife said "are you sure, that really does not make sense". He replied "oh yeah I am sure, they do it to make maintenance simple."

When we stopped I showed him the fluid fill for DEF under the hood. I did not want him to tell that to a clueless customer and have them ruin their new truck.

It was the basis for the Cologne V6.

Honda and Yamaha still make V4s (ST, VFR, VMax) and Suzuki did (Cavalcade, Madura) I can't remember Kawasaki making one but they might have in a side by side Mule or personal watercraft.

Whenever I hear a Civic enthusiast refer to his engine as a "V4" I ask him if he got it from an Interceptor or a Magna

For whatever reason, the incorrect use of "V4" is quite popular among Civic "enthusiasts."

Later they bought an OHC 4 from British Leyland, but the quality from the UK was so bad they bought the tooling and built it themselves. The last real SAAB OHC engines trace their roots to that BL motor.

I think people say "v" because they hear people say v6. I asked my wife if she know what type of engine was in any of our cars and she went 0-3. Did use v configurations for each one too!

I spent a lot of time troubleshooting a Nissan Altima for a coworker. His initial complaint was the car didn't have as much power as it used to. When I rode with him (so he could demonstrate) he was slower than my grandmother, which is saying something.

I said "you need to press the accelerator down more". He said, "no, I press it the same as I always do, but it has less power than usual." He also shops for/rates cars based on how much power they have, but to him the power is this micro-movement of the go-pedal and how much go he gets from the pedal. He'll hop into another vehicle, press the identical distance, and if it doesn't pull away harder than what he has it has no power.

Over a loonnnngg time and a few mechanics (he was pretty cheap too) it was an intake manifold gasket leak.

One day, he got a speeding ticket for going 60 on the 110 freeway (strangely zoned for 55 north of downtown L.A., which caught him out as he passed the CHP). I started calling him Speed Racer.

I read somewhere that the Trollhatten made Epsilon chassis 9-3s were substantially stronger in rollovers than their G6/Malibu/Vectra sister cars

Don't know if it's true or just another dumb edition to the dumb things that people say but I would like to believe it is.
Kinda' makes up for the once a year or so that my step-mother's 9-3 just would not start until it got towed into the dealer. Then it started perfectly.

I had a acquaintance tell me this one. He took his early-90s Chev K2500 with the 350, car shopping. When it came time to discuss trade-in on the truck the salesmen told him it has an oil leak. (A 350 with an oil leak. Never would have guessed!) He told them he knew about that. They went on to tell him they would have to fix it ([censored]), and that since that engine isnt made anymore, parts are hard to come by.
I started laughing hysterically.

I think that may have been true back in the day of lacquer paints--look a long time for the (essentially paint thinner?) to finish evaporating out.

But they haven't used lacquer in a while...

Had a friend of mine tell me his Grand Cherokee with AWD was terrible in the snow. I told him that it might be because of his bald highway tires or original brakes at 120k miles. He disagreed and still to this day drives around in vehicles with bald tires. He will spend thousands modifying the engine, but the tires will be so bald you can't tell what the tread pattern was. He drove around on tires for so long on his truck that one of them actually popped. I refuse to drive with him.

"I will not use Quaker State because I drive a sports car." My GF told me today while at AAP. Her car was a 2005 Mazda 6. I told her that I used it with no problems. She said "Well you have a truck, that's different." So I picked up a quart Pennzoil instead to keep her quiet. Never bothered to tell her that QS and Pennzoil are made by the same company.

I know a mechanic and he worked on my old cars few times on little things and I thought he had decent knowledge about modern cars.

My opinion of him quickly changed after he told me that I should use premium gas in my cars, that required regular gas btw, if I want my catalytic converters to last. I was about 20 then and even then I knew he was speaking out of his behind. I asked him what was his reasoning for it, but he couldnít come up with one other than "trust me I know what I'm talking about, I've been working on cars when you were in diapers" sort of explanation.

Needless to say I stopped going to his shop after that conversation. This worked out pretty well, as he started charging premium dollar shortly after and many of his clients left and he ended up closing his shop.

either way, the clear tends to flake off, then the basecoat soon after, in hilariously large chunks. sometimes you can get the clear and color to come off at the same time, so you don't even expect it.

As you said, that was a result of poor painting methods more than your washing. My mom had a silver '79 Nova, and the paint on the top surfaces really peeled as the years wore on. The trunk had to be repainted twice.

I remember the days when I'd see (and still do frown ) white Chrysler minivans and Chevy trucks and Lumina's with the paint flapping in the wind, literally coming off in sheets LOL.

Some Fords still do this. Ive seen pictures of recently washed CVs where the paint came off in sheets and left 1/3 of the roof as bare metal.

Another story. Not my story, but I still liked it so much that I remember it to this day.

Lady brought her then fairly new Ford Falcon to her mechanic. "This thing gets terrible gas mileage."

The mechanic checks point gap, dwell, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, air filter, carburetor...everything checks out. He even goes as far as to disconnect the fuel pump from the tank and run a line to a glass jar so he can observe the fuel consumption. The 144 just sips gas at a miserly rate. So he gives it a clean bill of health.

She comes back in later that week still complaining that it's still using too much gas. She insists that she is very easy on the gas pedal. So he decides to take a ride with her to see for himself.

She gets into the car pulls out the choke lever and hangs her pocketbook on it.

Fuel consumption problem solved. Pocketbook storage problem created.

I think that may have been true back in the day of lacquer paints--look a long time for the (essentially paint thinner?) to finish evaporating out.

But they haven't used lacquer in a while...

When I had my Caddy painted (not with laquer), the guy that painted it told me not to wax it for at least a week to make sure the clearcoat cured completely.

YES-there was a guy in the apt building I lived in NJ who had an 87 Cougar he incessently washed-took the painted pin stripes first, then the paint. It was silver in color

I admit to using a paint pin on a timing belt.... cheap insurance if anyone spun a pully over through stupidity while I was taking a leak.

And cuts the install time to under three hours.

It's uncommon, but it's actually possible for this to be a case. Given a fairly aerodynamic vehicle with very tall gearing, the gains from going faster and getting the engine into its efficiency peak can outweigh the losses from the worse aerodynamic drag at higher speeds.

^ Tee hee hee you believe it too. wink

Aerodynamic drag is exponential, it's hard to overcome that without deliberately poisoning the low-end power. With VVTi etc now it's even harder.

Yep pure silliness. In testing most cars were most fuel efficient at a steady speed of around 35 mph. You would expect the car to be tuned to be most efficient at the lowest speed it slips into top gear around 40 mph, but 35 mph and the next to the highest gear usually is most efficient it appears. Although a few cars have been slightly more eficient around 55 mph.

I think they are confusing the steady speed highway efficieny with the higher speeds, but why they'd claim 75 mph is more efficient than say 55-65 mph is really baseless.

I talked with a local engineer who explained to me that engine parameters are maximized for 70 mph by design. That doesn't mean the car gets the best gas mileage at that speed, just that all controls are optimized and the engine runs most efficiently at 70 mph.

I think people may have heard something similar, but then they turn around and misinterpret what they heard, and repeat something different.

Road friction is fixed, regardless of speed, AFAIK. Drag through bearings is also fixed. Wind drag goes up as the square of speed. As pointed out, it might be possible to gear it so that the engine is at its sweet spot at 70. [I think it was on here that I read GM got into trouble for leaning out the ECU at 70mph? Below that speed, it ran richer to meet EPA requirements. May have been the typical internet controversy, though--I've never seen data for that assertion.]

I'd think that would make it look bad on the EPA test cycle though, since that means it's always "not a peak", since EPA doesn't get to 70mph AFAIK.

not sure how relevant it is... but GM did do a bit of that in the late 80s/early 90s.... in a couple of calibration, "highway fuel" mode will bump up the spark advance a little and lean out the AFR to ~15.4 when at relatively low load above 50MPH...

the EPA caught onto that pretty quickly though.

the old EPA highway cycle never actually hit 70 IIRC. they do have a visual of the speeds they put them through, but i don't know where to find it off-hand. the new tests do hit 70 from what i remember, but not for a very long period of time.

EDIT: here we go:

But engine efficiency at a certain engine/road speed is not really the stated issue. It is fuel efficeincy/consumption (mpg) at a certain speed. Because it takes more power to travel at 70+ mph than at 55-65 mph, 70+ mph is less fuel efficient despite engine efficiency. It's hard to make blanket statements as various years and models are tuned and geared different, ie some (few) cars actually get peak mpg at 60 mph, others at 55 mph, 35 mpg etc. But I've never seen test of a car that got better milage at 70-75 mph than at 55-60 mph mph and lower speeds.

The 1985-1988 Nissan Maxima had that problem. Underhood heat was not well controlled, and it would burn off the factory paint after a few years. It also burnt to death numerous parts under the hood of those cars.
