Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, 03 Honda, 7.8k miles

Spaces no longer have the same width as charaters, so I have to use tabs to format this page. All my old posts (over a year ago) just had spaces and formated correctly inside the 'code' tag. Do a search on my name to find them.

Pennzoil Platinum SM Synthetic 5w-20
03 Honda Accord EX, manual 5 speed with 2.4L 4 cylinders VTEC DOHC engine.
BlackStone Labs.

Oil had 7,794 miles, 26 weeks, 278 miles/week
Makeup oil: 0.
Car had 66,714 miles, 4 years.

Honda recommends 5w-20 oil at 10k miles or 1 year for "normal" driving and at 5k miles or 6 months or "severe" driving for my 4 cylinders engine. My driving is considered "normal" by Honda's definition.

VOAs
Pennzoil Dino 5w20 VOA, dated Januarys 2003. M1 0w20 VOA, dated April 2003.
Pennzoil Synthetic SL 5w20 VOA, dated June 2003.
Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 UOA, dated June 2005.
UOAs
Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic with 8k miles on oil dated Dec 2005.

No UOL for Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic with 8.1k miles on oil, dated Sep 2006

Right numbers are this Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 UOA.

All comments are welcome. Thanks.

The Molybdenum for the 2003 UAO was 326. It was high because the engine still had Honda's bread-in oil. The 3 got lost in the reformating.

Nice numbers! Any fuel economy difference between the 5w20 PP and 0w20 M1? I wonder if M1 would do as well? Your early runs were with a fairly new engine in winter temps, and the formulation of M1 has changed(maybe for the worse). On this latest run, I assume it was mostly short trip driving, amazing! I think you could easily take this oil to 10K especially with summer coming on. I suppose you like to change it every 6 months. Even 1 year/15k is not out of the question, your wear metals would be at Al=10 ppm, Fe=12 ppm or maybe less. You could pull samples from the dipstick at 8K, 11.5K, and then at 15k when you change it out or just do one at 7.5k and another at the end. Or you could just keep doing what your doing, which should keep the engine running strong for about 600k.

Thanks,

The engine may last 600k but I donít think the rest of the car will.

I started commuting to Boston about 3 months ago. It is about a 25 mile commute each way but sometime the traffic has a lot of stop and go. Before that, my commute was only 2.5 miles each way to the train station with longer drives on the weekend. So this run had the first half with very short trips and the second half with longer trips with sometime traffic. I think the short drives for the Dec 2005 UOA is why it had so much fuel in the oil at that time.

The previous 3 UOAs runs had very short trips 3 times a week with longer drives other times. The first 3 UOAs had a 150 mile trip twice a week with short drives the other days.

It is hard to say if the oil changes the gas mileage. I get 34 on the highway but in winter with my snows tires on I get around 27 of mix driving, sometime less.

I'll think I'll take it around 8.5 k next time but I don't like to change the oil in the winter.

If you get a sample pump from Blackstone ($25) you can monitor the oil at 7.5k intervals and maybe just change it once per year (if you only drive 15k per year). The fall is the best time to do this so the oil is fresh for the winter beating and then when the oil is ready to thicken a little you're into the summer when the oil is less subject to fuel dilution and no cold startups so wear is probably minimal. Maybe do your next change in October and then see how it looks in the spring, you could try the Mobil 1 EP or Amsoil if you're worried about going more than 10k. Watch for my UOAs, I am sure your Honda will do as well or better than my Toyota. I have read here that the Fram Air filters help with fuel dilution in the Hondas, have you tried them?

I don't understand how an air filter can help with fuel dilution. I'll try to find that topic.

Hi Mike,

The comment below is from the following thread:
http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/s...true#Post792247
Gene K said:
"Yes, Terry [Dyson] likes a simple Fram Air Filter Element as the Filtechs extra restriction can "trick" the ECM into running to rich."

There are many comments about Terry preferring simple paper air filters in cars with fuel dilution especially Honda V6s. You have a four cylinder and it seems there was fuel dilution on three of your analyses, sometimes this is because of driving in stop and go conditions. You might want to try a paper filter. The fuel dilution did not hurt your wear numbers, but you don't want to extend your oci with fuel dilution issues.

Dennis

This is great news for me. I have the 2005 version of the 2.4 in my CR-V and I use this oil now. I think I can be confident with 7.5k/one year changes on this engine now.

I'm not sure if 1st Place belongs to the oil brand - or this Honda. I would bet this engine would do well on any SM-GF4 5W-20 synthetic oil.... even Supertech.

Triple, you're correct. This engine actually does show great results on any oil.

Any comments on fuel dilution from more expert members? If that problem is soved for this car, he could go to a 15k oci, no?

I'll think I'll just keep the oil change between 7.5k and 8.5k and not worry about it.

I had some problems formatting this post so I've had an error with the header. I've just checked and the Aug 2004 change was also with dino oil and the Apr change was with Penn Syn SL. You can check the link to the older uoa.

I've got good UOAs for the two times I've used dino oil when you consider the engine was still breaking in on the first UOA.
