Might be blasphemy here on BITOG but I know some of us have put less than ideal optimal oil in our cars. shocked
Here's my worst so far.
I got a new tractor last year and it recommends the first two oil changes be done at 50 hour intervals. Being a good BITOGer I put it Rotella T6 5W40 after I dumped the factory fill as it was just before winter.
Then come spring its time to change the tractor oil again and the cars too. I did the tractor first and watched 8L of synthetic oil with 50 hours on it drain into a semi clean bucket and thought it was a bit of a waste...
I ended up pumping 4L of the used tractor oil into the Neon. It was fairly black but after several months it seems to be doing the job in the Neon. I'm going to run it all winter and then we'll see if the car is still on the road. I might treat it with a jug of PYB!
I'm sure someone has done worse than though...

so you reused break-in oil from a tractor?

ow.
I wouldnt be worried about clean I'd not like the breakin chunks, sand whatever.

Worst thing I ever did was reuse an oil filter on a tracker.

the oil fell out in chunks from the drain pan. and I think the filter was welded on.

It was impossible to get off at the time being surrounded by cv axle, exhaust, and various radiator hoses etc.

The tracker was used for a paper route and had 12000miles on conventional and was 2qts low....

Next oil change I did 2k later and changed the filter too :\

shortly thereafter the new oil started dissolving all the crud on the gaskets making it leak 1qt/1000miles which I think actually helped the engine live to 228k miles when the rest of the vehicle was junk (165000 paper route miles)

Since it actually leaked and didnt just burn.. it got checked weekly and actually topped off. I provided a handy one month gallon jug for that ;p.

I once put used oil from my F150 into the Aerostar, but it only had maybe 1000 miles on it. Wanted to go to a thicker grade in the F150 and couldn't wait.

Interesting... Not sure what would make it past the oil filter, but I'd think a good oil filter would filter out the large chunks pretty quick--then again, the tractor's oil filter likely did the same exact thing. No chunks should be in the oil, only possibly whatever casting flash was in the bottom of the oil pan.

Might change it on a short OCI though, in the Neon. 278Mm = 172kmiles, so that Neon isn't exactly new anymore. With that kind of miles it probably doesn't care.

Worst oil. As far as what, performance as per a uoa, noise, what are the parameters.
As far as noisy every engine I ever put mobil 1 into made more valvetrain noise than the oil it replaced. Now I doubt very much the noise equated to additional wear however I don't like noisy.
I put the mobil 1 v-twin 20w-50 into my Harley after I broke it in on pennzoil, immediately the top end made such a racket I though something was broken. I went to the shop and asked them to check it out. They agreed that something sounded broken.
So off come the rocker boxes for inspection, compression test etc. 250 bucks later they found nothing wrong.
I took the bike home, grabbed 3 quarts of rp 20w-50 automotive oil, drained the junk mobil 1,started the bike and BAM,whisper quiet top end.
Never again will I spend money on mobil 1

I'm pretty sure my introductory post here at BITOG had to do with mixing straight-30 engine oil with Lucas Oil Stabilizer to use as a gear lube for my old '95 Maxima's 5-speed manual transaxle -- which specced 75w-90 GL4. Not my proudest moment, but certainly worth a few yucks in retrospect...

It wasn't the tractor break-in oil from the factory, but for some reason they still do a second 50hr change interval and then go to 100hr intervals after that. I figured in the Neon I probably run more like 200hrs between oil changes so 50 hours in a understressed diesel shouldn't be too bad?
The Neon is rusting out now so it days are definitely numbered anyways. I would bet alot of money that it won't die of engine lubrication related causes. The rust will get it first!

LOS on top of some SM valvoline in my 4x4 Chevy 4.3 WT. Peak SM 5w30 in the 05 RAV4. Actuall had some bad Kendall 5w30 once too.
Good suff: EXxon Superflo or FS was the low buck treat back then.

It looks like the idle is set to low to provide optimal oil pressure. it seems fine when the tack shows 500+ rpm

I haven't used a bad oil yet. I didn't like M1 5w20 in my f150, it was noisy. that truck ran best on Mobil super synthetic or PYB

Catrol 30w in the cardboard can circa early eighties. Put it into a early 90's Nissan 4x4 4cyl. No issues.

Re my Dakota oil light, it's a computer controlled idle and IMO the tach reads a little low.

The oil light came on when I was starting off from a stop-- stick shift, lugging, dropping the RPMs slightly.

Anyway it wasn't the best thing and now I'm running 15w40 and straight 30 weight and plan to keep it in there through the winter. LOL

Is that from the Delo deal? I'm down to two gallons of SAE30 and one 15W40.

By far the worst was M1 5w30. Check out my UOA. Looking at the wear metals, I must have taken 50k miles of the engines life.. NEVER again will I make that mistake of using THAT brand. I don't care if they have changed formulations, I still don't trust that oil

I dont know if its the worst oil or just the worst application, but I used gear oil once to top off and old wagoneer I had with 150K+ miles and burned oil like crazy. It was all I had and I was broke so I ran it. It didnt make one bit of difference in the way it ran but it sure smelled terrible burning it off!

My son was given a welder with a 30 HP v twin engine and a bad oil leak. We checked the oil when we got it and it had a half a a cup of part oil and part water. Son had just demonstrated that the welder started before we checked the oil.

To flush out the water I used an unknown mixture of our car drain oi and ran the generator for a short time to warm it up. I put in new oil and filter and the oil has stayed clean and my son fixed the leak.

Moral of the story. Don't trust low oil shut offs!

Left 20W50 in my 1988 Jetta GLI 16v over a new england winter. It made lots of interesting sounds starting smile It was installed in New Mexico in summer by an import shop.

Thankfully most cold starts were in a 35F garage. But the ones <0F it barely turned over.

In the mid and late 60s I used QS in my 64 Valiant slant 6. I used it for 50K at 2K OCIs and it sludged the engine to the point I had to scoop the stuff out. I switched to Valvoline HD straight 20wt and it was much improved.

It's an $18 Thrush turbo full size (not cherry bomb) that exits rear of the cab and has a two inch flat cut off spout. Truck is out on loan but when I get it back I'll make a video.

It's particularly awesome decellerating in 2nd gear with a cold motor.

Worst oil was a bad batch of Amsoil 20w50 I put in my harley. Engine started getting real noisy about 40 miles into my ride. I went right home and dumped what looked like water out of it. The OCI could have been measured in hours. That was the first and last time I tried Amsoil. Went back to running Redline and never had another problem.

Hi,
Indylan - The original Castrol Forumula SLX 0w-30 (German made - ester based - green) of around 1996-7

It was prone to rapid and serious varnish deposits in some engine families

After a number of engine issues the product was rapidly updated and finally withdrawn

Funny you mention that. Last year I tried the Amsoil 10w-40 in my yamaha 1100 v-star. Same thing. Top end noise was unreal. Drained it for gtx and the bike ran great. Then I discovered rotella and stuck with it.

I can honestly say I've never put anything but the best oil of the era into any of my cars - and I'm 59 years old.

Even an well used 1963 Chevy Nova with a big inline six (292cu?) was given Castrol GTX, probably 20W-50, when my wife and I were first married and so broke we were eating rice and beans.

GTX at the time was considered good stuff. This was when it was in the old cardboard cans!

Any time I used Valvoline oil in my cars, or even my lawnmower, I experienced rapid oil consumption. The only time I ever had to add top off oil to my Saturn was when I used Valvoline synthetic.

About 5 years ago, I ran QS 5W-30 in my daughter's 1999 Accord and it consumed it at about a quart every 1k miles. I ran Mobil Clean 5000 next and it consumed about a quart in 3K. That formulation of QS didn't work well in that Accord.

This illustrates the magnitude of problems I've had running name brand dinos and synths for the 42 years I've been maintaining many cars.

I know it's a site favorite but pennzoil yellow bottle. Because of what I've personally seen it due to several engines; I won't ever use a pennzoil product again. Absolutely nasty sludge inside the engine. Plus, it cooked off in a friends camaro during a high speed run; it ruined the engine. The camaro had nothing but pennzoil yellow bottle in it for its whole life.

Thats funny, I work with a guy that has run nothing but PYB in his Chevy Cavalier since new, and he now has almost 350,000miles on it. Running on borrowed time I guess.

Buddy had a Beretta with the 3.1 in it. It started knocking like crazy, so we dumped in 3 quarts of 20W-50 and 2 quarts of STP oil treatment. I've never heard one of those GM V-6s run so quiet. crush

Back in the '60s when I didn't know any better, I was buying Kenwood 30W for a old oil burner '57 Ford I had(1st car)... Stated on can was for Hi-Compression engines, hydraulic lifters, etc but had no API classification... I found after maybe three months there was sludge building up inside the valve covers, didn't have that problem with QS HD 30w I had prev used... After I cleaned out the covers, I went back to the QS and had no more sludge...

As far as running, was no different than any other oil... Only time I've seen a noticeable difference in 46+ years of oil changes is immediately after a change when the oil likely had significant fuel dilution, or had dumped something like Rislone or MMO in the crankcase... I haven't used any of that stuff in the past 25years or so, last was in sludged up 3.3L Chevy V6...

That is cavalier for crying out loud. Probalby just puts around from point a to point b. Normal commute and all. I never said one would be running on borrowed time with it. I bet the inside of that motor is nasty though. My grandfather ran PYB in his 63 step side and changed it religiosly at 3k miles. The inside of that engine was disgusting. Dirtiest engine I've every been in. Tore down another buddies 302 that ran pyb also; same thing.

I'm sorry if you like PYB and I offended you. There is no reason to get offended because someone doesn't like the same thing. Heck, there is no reason because someone says something I like is garbage. I bet there are a ton of people that think my mustang is a piece of junk. Even if they told me; I'm not going to get offended and try to defend it. I like it; and that's good enough for me. Again, sorry if I upset you. It truly wasn't my intention. I just stated what I think to be the worst oil I've ever used.

me 2: Mobil 1 15w-50 (in bmw 6 cylinder). did not give any benefits.
(probably for very hi temp- racing)
20W straight (for california) heard noise right away
Subjectively: Valvoline doesnt seem that good
Used these in my bmw- smoke@tailpipe@ 60k miles,
frequent oil change, original owner.

I did one 6K run of M1 15W-50 in my four cylinder BMW.
I used the oil because I had it, having bought it on clearance figuring I'd either trade it or find a use for it.
I'd bought it cheaply enough from Meijer and Target that I could have used it in my mowers.
The engine seemed perfectly happy with the oil, smooth, quiet and as willing to rev as it is on the forty grades I've mostly used.
I can't think of any oil I've ever used in any engine that seemed really bad.
I have used oils with high expectations that went unfulfilled, like Edge SM, but I can't recall any oil being notably bad in use.

Mobil 1. I've put it in several cars that had never consumed oil before and did on Mobil 1. I like how they have so many different grades available and seem to offer a wider range of products compared to some other brands, but if I pay that price I'd like it to stay in the sump.

Trying to get back from Kansas to Michigan. Bought a '65 chevy Impala for 100.00 (it was a p.o.s. but cheaper than a bus ticket) It was using so much oil that I pulled into a truck stop and got 5 gallons of used Diesel oil. Ran out of that and had to get more, prior to making it home. This was in 1975. Now I wonder if the oil filter was even working. RP

Man,the car was only ten years old in 75? Did it have a ton of miles on it or something?

Actually the body was quite nice. 2dr, 3spd on the floor. The whole drive train was shot. I thought the universal(s) would let loose before I got home. Yeah, I know, if I knew then what I know now. (427 4spd has a nice ring to it!) RP

Interesting.
The 4.6L 4V I just bought with 50000kms on it has had nothing but pyb in it since new and when I replaced the valve covers it is absolutely spotless underneath. I guess it's application dependent.
I bought the engine from the original purchaser of the car,I was concerned about his claims of mileage and maintenance because the car itself was totalled and all that's left is the shaker intake and engine. He then provided me service records for the car. It was taken to the great Canadian oil change every 5000kms and fed 5w-20 pyb.
API certified or not,I guess some oils just don't perform as well as others in different engines and perhaps brand does matter.

Remember that most of the anecdotes in this thread are from pretty dated oils, back when none of the conventionals were overly stellar, particularly in the 10w-40 variety.

For noise, Mobil Super 5000 5W20, first and only time i put a 5W20 in my car, after that i am sticking to xW30, probably 10W30.

Co-Workers make fun of me for using Valvoline Next Gen, saying it is absolute [censored], due to being recycled, the car loves it but the price point is too high for what you get, i can get mobil super for less.

Future oil changes

Pennzoil Yellow bottle, 5W30 with a Purolator Pure One filter

Mobil Super 5000 10W30, with a Purolator Filter

1972. At my first service station job this older man pulls in with a 1970/1971 (not sure) Dart 318/auto. Engine is making all kinds of noise. Jack says pull valve covers. It looked like a jello mold of valve cover. The gentleman swore by Shell oil.
Long story short, high parafin/wax content. The car never left town, never got warmed up. Cleaned out as much as could, VC's back on, 20wt Gulf oil, cardboard in front of radiator, got it HOT. You should have seen the lumps and [censored] that came out.
So, yes oils back then were not very good at almost everything like they are today.
The gentleman still insisted on using Shell oil.......

Years ago PYB was known for sludge. I had a buddy that worked as an automotive machinist. He asked every customer what oil they had been running before he tore into it. He told me he would never run Pennzoil after the things he saw.
PYB is a whole different animal now days and some good stuff.

Not my personal vehicle but put "Conklin" brand oil in my dad's 2000 durango and was running it the 15,000 it claimed to be good for well it ended up coming out clumpy and trashing the motor in a vehicle that was never driven hard and always serviced by the dealer

My first car has full of sludge (literally, the rockers had their own grooves in the black gunk, and 1/2L from nothing on the dipstick to full demonstrated that the crank probably had it's own groove too).

Scraped out as much as I could, and flushed it with kero (filled it and ran it at idle).

Used home brand 20W-40 re-refined (prolly recycled), and it used a litre that week. Changed it again, and it used a litre the next week.

Put XLD in it, and it dropped to about 1L/5,000km.

Worst oil that I had in my truck was castrol Edge SPT 5w-30. Around 2k miles I noticed that my oil pressure gauge was lower than normal. Checked the oil, levels were where they should be. Decided to change the oil & filter and the oil came out like water. Put in Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 and same amount of time and miles later, no problems at all. I had QSUD 5w-30 in before the castrol, and I didn't have the problem then. The castrol really sheared
in my engine.

My engine hates Castrol products, but loves SOPUS products. I have some Valvoline Synpower 5w-30 I bought 2 weeks ago I'm going to try when its time for my oil change. But no more Castrol for me.

I hear ya! This is a pic of my explorer at 100k. The first 50k it only ran the dreaded QSGB and the next 50k was with that sludge in a bottle PYB! As you can see its wrecked!

Back on topic.
When I was a kid I drove a wore out 4cylinder fiero. I had to put oil in it every time I stopped for gas. I would put anything in it. Whatever I could get for a buck at the gas station. Some of that 10/30 was as thick as 90 weight and had a green tint to it. I also put a qt of used air compressor oil in it once from work.I never changed the oil either. When I got another car I gave it to a friend of mine free of charge...and was glad to be rid of it

Years ago, dad's best friend gave him his 1976 AMC Gremlin when he was done with it to do whatever he wanted with it.

I cleaned out the contents of the hatch and found a really old bottle of a low-buck 10W-30...it might have been Sears Spectrum or CT oil.

Hung onto it for no real reason, and about 10 years after that, borrowed a buddy's oil-burning 1987 Mercury Tracer and had to add oil to it.

Didn't want to spend 'good' money on oil for it, so I dumped this bottle of oil...it was dark and thick, I vaguely remember. Car ran fine, but I wish I'd kept it as a collectible....

More like; wrong oil, not bad oil.

Used 10w30 on my MB w124 and later in the same day found out (from the owner's manual) that these old engines use this grade for ambient temps lower than 10C (50F). Temps here never even come close to 15C (59F)in worst winter days.

That would have blew up the engine.

Speaking of bad oil, never heard of such a thing here in Saudi Arabia where oil is cheap and found every where smile

combination of wrong grade and just [censored] oil to begin with:

Dollar General brand 20W50 in an engine that specs 5W-30... this was in ~2005 or so, that engine is still running around too(40K miles later), most recently filled with Mobil 5000 5W-30.

the fuel pump is controlled by a combination of the ECM and an oil pressure switch... whenever the oil pressure is above 4PSI or so, the switch will power the pump even if the ECM doesn't... shut it off with the oil still relatively cold and when it had 20W-50 in it, it ran for a good 4 seconds after the engine stopped.

I'm coming into this conversation 2+ years late, but for posterity's sake I must say, sad as it was for the problems your Dad's Durango developed, I do not for one second believe it was Conklin's oil that actually "caused" the scenario you described with your dad's vehicle. I've been around Conklin lubes/products for close to 30 years, and have NEVER seen or heard of anything similar being caused by any of their materials. In fact, the far opposite is the more usual case. Simply, I'd guess the vehicle would have gone "bang" when it did, regardless of oil brand/type being installed. Still, I can understand the frustration and grief caused by such a bad loss.

based on UOA's, worst i used was DGauto SF 10w-40 from Dollar general. had an old caddy that leaked and burned 1 qt every 1000 or so. For one oil change, i tried this junk as top-off oil and results were terrible.

PYB SAE 40wt. Not really "worst" but incorrect. The thick straight weight did just fine through the TX summer driving the interstates in my '97 Chevy PU.

Also have used 20-50 on occasion when I get 'em almost free. Still zero issues.

I bought a sweet 1969 Karmann Ghia from a pal in 1974. But it used oil, so it came with the instruction, " don't buy gas without checking the oil too."

I was too busy being a full time hippie and forgot to check the oil twice. It locked up between OKC and Tulsa. I got out of the car with my knapsack and stuck my thumb out . I never looked back at the car. I couldn't afford to have it towed, let alone fixed.

When I was much younger a friend of mine's mother had a Lincoln town car that smoked and burned oil pretty bad she had to stop for a top off at a gas station and bought two cycle engine oil on accident but said it stop smoking and useing so much so from then on they used two cycle oil in the car always thought it was kind of crazy but the thing lasted for several years after would've loved to seen under the valve covers

Had a change of Valvoline Synpower 5w30 in the Saturn. It ran poorly and mileage went down the toilet, so I dumped it way early. There were big chunks of metal in the oil I drained and more chunks trapped in the filter. Looked like bearing material. The engine never ran the same after that.

Years previously, I had quit using Valvoline in the Bug because I had to add oil every day, equaling a quart or so a week (!), with Valvoline 10w30. I tried Havoline 10w30 and my consumption went down to about a quart a month.

Guys that work in motorcycle shops, who know 2 stroke oil pretty well, have been doing that for years. I first heard about it in 1970 when I started working at Triumph of Oklahoma City.

I ran used motor oil from dad's 55-gallon drum in my '75 Chevy Vega for the first 6 months I went to college. Then we rebuilt the engine with iron sleeves during Christmas break, so I started using decent name-brand motor oils. (One of which was Arco Graphite. I liked it.)

I did run used 5w20 from Eaton's valve train test rigs in my riding mower one summer. It ran fine on it, but consumption was high.

Back in the early 80's my dad would always buy old Ford vans for work and old Buick Lesabres for family cars - we had a few 75 and 76 models.
When they were low on oil we would go buy qts of Texas Gold SAE30 oil - more than likely SA rated. They would only last a year or two and we'd buy another old clunker on it's last legs. I look back and realize , we killed them old cars.

you know, I've always been curious to know what would happen in that situation, but I've never felt curious enough to potentially scrap an otherwise good engine to find out. seems like even if the viscosity were close, the additives used in each would be far different considering one is intended to be combusted and the other isn't.

2 stroke oil has to do several jobs, and do them well enough so the engine doesn't seize. Putting it in a 4 stroke engine is a walk In the walk for the 2 stroke oil compared to the usual 2 stroke duties. Usually it has to lubricate bearings even though it's been mixed with gas at some insane ratio. At full strength a good 2 stroke oil has no problems meeting the demands of a 4 stroke engine, plus it burns clean.

It has marvelous cooling properties. On our Bultaco race bikes we would routinely drill a 1mm angled upward hole in the piston just below the ring lands, and right where the bridge of the exhaust port is.. That area is responsible for 99% of all 2 stroke piston seizures. With the piston modified like that, a cool stream of oi/gas mixture, pressurized by the downward stroke of the piston, is directed at the hottest part of the exhaust port / cylinder wall. No more seizures .

2 stroke oil has next to no metallic additives (zddp, ca, mg, etc.), especially in TCW3 flavor.

Add a bottle of supplement. Redline or GM EOS

I mean, if this is a good trick to keep a smoker from smoking.

2-stroke oil seems like it would be the bumble bee of lubrication science.

I mean, perhaps it doesn't work very well (2-stroke engines have fairly short, brutal lives) but how does it work at all?

We've got threads discussing new developments in thin, low viscosity lubricants and the relative importance of anti-wear agents and friction modifiers in the boundary layer, and 2-strokes have been running at way lower viscosities for..what...best part of a century?

I'd be a bit concerned about using it as a substitute for 4-stroke oil, because it's normally total-loss, so its got no need for long term oxidative or thermal stability. I'd expect it to coke/sludge up long term.

Re "stopping a smoker from smoking" its designed to burn, so it probably burns cleaner. It'd probably still raise HC emissions so it might not pass an emissions test.

I have used premix as a flushing oil. Think that was probably a mistake, though AFAIK it didn't break anything.

I dumped a quart of gear lube in my '73 Vega college car, thinking that it might help reduce consumption.
Probaby fortunate that it didn't, since I doubt that the Vega would have done well with continued use of gear lube as top-off oil.
Kmart frequently had Citgo 10W-40 for some insane price anyway, twenty nine cents a quart IIRC.

Used to watch my Dad change oil. He'd buy the cheapest oil he could find and if he didn't have enough he'd just add whatever was in the garage regardless of grade or weight. Needless to say, I've never let him touch my vehicles.

I stopped reading this thread on page three. Way too many anecdotal tales of PYB and QS sludging engines. Too many tales of Mobil 1 being too loud. Too many Valvoline hating statements with no supporting evidence. I'm not a Mobil 1 fan or user, nor do I use a lot of Valvoline, but I don't bash the oils due to the fact that they work and work very well. I personally don't believe a bit of the QS/Pennz. sludge stories either. Maybe you guys weren't as good about maintenance when you were younger? That's my angle.

I've never used a "bad" oil. They all seem to perform the same for me. No difference in UOAs in terms of wear, either. I've noticed a slight increase in engine noise using Mobil 1, but I doubt that's hurting anything. It might also just be a placebo effect.

I think you may have taken a couple statements the wrong way. Me and another both were joking about PYB sludging. And we are both currently using it

In my youth, I had a couple of serious oil burners that I kept on the road using 40wt. paraffin based oil that came in 2 gallon cans. "Morlube" was the brand, if I remember correctly.
If it had any detergency, it was totally accidental. But it was oil.......In the sense that it floated on water, was a liquid, and had been through a course screen, since it had been pumped out of the ground. I believe it retailed for about $2 for the 2 gallon steel can. I would pay that for the empty can, now.

I bought a case of Advance Auto when they first come out with their own brand. It was a intro cheap price so I bought a case. I put changed oil in my car and truck with it and they both used a quart in less than 3000 miles. they never did before and when I went back to my usual brand they didn't ever again. I am going to have to say it was the oil on that one.

I've been pretty ruthless with my Honda Accord, although I couldn't have been that bad, it's got 282k miles on it and it still runs great. But I've used 3 different weights at the same time, from three different brands, because it's all I had lying around. I put a couple quarts of diesel oil in it, with three quarts of 5w30. I've topped off with mystery oil once. I generally ran Walmart super tech in it most of the time, in fact I very rarely put a name brand oil in it, but I always changed it regularly.

I own another car (a lexus), that I am anal about with oil changes, yet the Honda is doing great.

That Vega burned a quart of oil every 100 miles. When I pulled into a gas station, I would say "fill up the oil and check the gas". Then when we sleeved it, consumption went to about 1 quart per 1000 miles. I changed the oil once a year in that car, which was about 12,000 miles. It lasted me through 5 years of school, and I sold it to a friend of mine in my hometown.

Had nothing to do with the "look" of it. I actually used the stuff. The problem is the graphite would fall out of suspension and turn to a thick gooey like sludge. At least that is what I think caused the goo. It was HORRIBLE oil I know that. I had to rebuild an engine run on that stuff and it was just full of thick nasty sludge and the oil was changed on time and there was no other issue behind it. It was common with that oil.

Nope. The Vega gave him good service, and he's still a friend.

Remember the old rule of thumb: "Any car that runs is worth $500"? I sold it to him for $200. I'd say he got his money's worth, because the car ran fine. It was rusty, but what mid-70's car wasn't when it was 10 years old? I wouldn't have hesitated to jump in that thing and drive it to California.

My Vega was also dead reliable.
I replaced the timing belt and water pump as well as the in-tank electric fuel pump, but that was about it.
If you broke a timing belt, that was no issue other than the inconvenience. It was easy enough to do that a young and poor college student could do it by the side of the road if needed.
Mine did have ignition points which required attention maybe once each fall if you wanted reliable starting in cold, damp weather.
I did have to remove the plugs every now and then to either clean and regap them them or replace them, but other than that, the Vega was fine to drive anywhere as long as you kept oil in the engine.
Too bad that GM didn't raid their Euro parts bins for engines as Ford did with the early Pinto.
GM had some very good Opel and Vauxhaul fours that would have worked well. They also had their own cast iron 2.5 from the old Chevy II and later Nova that was eventually used in Pontiac's version of the Vega.

Whoa! Total feeling of deja vu here: I actually did replace the timing belt of my Vega by the side of the road when I was a young and poor college student. It died dead away as I was cruising up I69 in lower Michigan. I hiked into the next town and bought a belt, and got a local to drive me back out to the car. It took about a half-hour to replace, and I was on my way again.

That makes sense.

I just love a good Vega story.

Mine would use a quart of Quaker State in 350 miles. A quart of Chevron was good for about 450 miles. And a quart of Sunoco would take it down the road about 500 miles.

But the best option for my car was Castrol GTX 20W-50. It would hang in there for 7-800 miles on the average. I had to go to the import car parts joint to buy the stuff.

I bet today's 0W-20 PP would pour straight through that little engine and hit you on the top of your shoes. It certainly would be fuel saving because you couldn't drive anywhere.

There's nothing wrong with that. Did you try STP? Back in those days you were supposed to check the oil every time you filled. Somehow we evolved into a quality = no oil consumption view. I'm not sure that's a true and valid perspective.

I'd rather feed an engine oil than replace timing belts, de-carbon intakes with walnut shells, and live with weaker hyper pistons rather than forged.

Back to topic: my worst oil purchase and OCI has to have been 'Dollar General' brand of oil.

Not sure who made it, but engine was more noisy than any other time, and after it was drained the oil seemed VERY watered down (no coolant/water contanmination). I assume that is what shearing of oil does?

Same exact thing happened to me with my Harley. Never using that junk ever again.

Wow. Did either of you contact Amsoil about it? If so, what did they say?

If that's the oil consumption that you saw with your Vega, then you had a good one.
Mine as well as most used far more.
But, as long as you kept oil the thing, it would run for a very long time.

Worst oil I put in my car.....

Well, I was young and stupid. '84 Chevy Cavalier with a bad main seal. The oil light came on and it started making weird noises about 40 miles from home and I was a broke teenager. A friend lived along the route, so I stopped to beg him for some oil. All that was around the house was a couple of quarts of his dad's chainsaw bar oil. I happily dumped it in the engine and went on my way. The car still ran a year later when I sold it.

That's great! Probably no additive package to speak of, but it would have been thick enough.
