I've got a new Corolla with the free maintenance program, I was told the oil change interval is 1 year/10,000 miles with 0W-20 synthetic oil. Do you think I should wait that long? The owner's manaual has service schedules of every 6 months/5,000 miles, every service gets the tire rotations and fluid checks (and the floor mat placement check) but the oil only gets changed every other service if 0W-20 is used. I would think Toyota would know what they are doing but 10,000 miles on the factory fill makes me nervous. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Unless it is almost all city driving, you should be OK. If it is all city driving, then have them change the oil each time you bring it in even if they make you pay for it (or change it yourself at the same time).

I would do 2k 5k 10k changes but Im OIL OCD.

the purpose would be to get the break in wear/casting particles out.

We've ALWAYS drained the factory fill within 1500 miles.
Over the years, UOA's have verified the high initial/early
content of aluminum, iron, copper, and silicon. Knowing that as FACT, we've changed the FF by 1500 miles and then by 6-7K
miles.

Comprehensive UOA's including TBN, TAN, and particle counts
then help to guide us toward OCI's depending on the vehicle and it's use.

The longest we've been able to comfortably ( by UOA ) run with the excellent Toyota 0W20 has been about 7800-8000 miles, and that has been in a 2011 Prius.

hi Buick92. I believe toyota is doing the right thing. Toyota recommend 5,000 OCI in 2006 manual using conventional..

2012 recommend 10k oci with 0w20 synthetic oil..

I have a 2012 honda. I don't know if I should put dino, synthetic blend with the MM. manual is not clear...

You state "you were told". What does the owners manual recommend? Usually there are two OCI for a normal & severe driving

I always change my new Toyota engines at 1000 miles and run one 4000 interval of Mobil 5000 conventional. Then switch to any off the shelf synthetic and change every 5000 miles. My engines always go over 200,000 miles and never burn any oil. No way I'll do 10,000 miles.

Our 2007 Corolla is at about 80,000 miles, using 0W20 Mobil 1 and 10 k oil change intervals. The dipstick reading does not seem to go down at all during that time, and the oil does not get very dirty.

Our commuter 1994 Escort is now at 300,000 miles, using 0W20 and 20K mile intervals........ and still burns very little oil.

10 k miles is easy with modern oils and engines. I think the Escort motor could be installed in a new car and sold to me.... and I would never know the difference, even after 300K.

I expect the Corolla to do as well or better!

I've had several toyotas and usedto do the OCD early oil change)my current twotoyotas went to 10k and 7500,one year intervals on factory fill. Don't sweat the small stuff take the included oilchangesandone they are donechange at 10kor1 year. Don't sweat it, this is ormal intervalfor Toyotas now. Enjoy the new ride and worry less, isn't that why you bought a Toyota?

Thanks for all of the information, I think that I will just run the factory fill until the 1 year/10,000 mile mark. I usually only put about 8000 to 9000 miles a year on my car so the oil will definitely be in there a year. I am convinced that toyota must know what's safe for there engines.

older camry use conventional motor oil and they are not design or required to use synthetic oil.

I trust Toyota. If toyota say use synthetic, then use it.

Toyota only need it to remain servicable for 60 - 100K miles. They are NOT concerened about elevated wear. Breaking in engines with the new oils is difficult due to the low additive levels. ABSOLUTELY leave the FF in for 3k miles 3 months. Then the first OC is VERY critical you use a fortified oil NOT an ILSAC GF5. I would look for older SM rated toyota oil or Use a Subaru or Mazda Idemitsu SM oil. Just go to the respective other dealer and pay the price. You wont regret it. BTW Delco filters work well on Toyotas with VVTi. I would absolutely NOT leave that oil in 10K - the car has long t chain and hyraulic tensoiner and vvti. Very critical to do a 3K dump.

Which is why it is well known that they fail at 100k.
