...and how much does the manual specify??

My Freestyle calls for either 5.9 qts or 6.0 qts, depending on where I look. Thing is, that puts it right between the two holes on the dipstick. Every other car I've had, "full" was right at the top hole?

So, I typically put in 6 qts, and then add 1/2 qt around 3K, just to refresh the add pack. This typically gets it close to the "full" mark. Then I'll put in another 1/2 qt around 6K. Since I'll have consumed about 8 oz or so, that'll put it at or just over the "full" mark, then I'll run it out to 10K. I like this, since I get to refresh that add pack/tbn twice over a 10K OCI. The oil is never more than 1-2mm over the "full" mark.

But doing the above, when I drain the oil (and add in what the filter holds), I'm pulling out nearly 7 qts? What gives?? It doesn't seem overfilled at any point, at least according to the dipstick?

I'm curious as to what people's listed capacities are versus how much they actually put in?

The last car I had, a Grand Am with the 2.4l four, stated 4 quarts in the OM, but 4.5 quarts at various other sources. Either one would put the oil right on the full mark, or just ever so slightly above. Honestly, I don't know why the 2 capacities showed up so similarly on the dip stick. I usually did 4, however. That way, when buying a 5-quart jug, I'd have one quart for top off. Since I burned a quart every 3,000 miles, I'd add the extra quart then.

On the Camry specs say 4.3, but 4 is full. Assume that's because not all the oil comes out on a change.

Truck calls for 4.5 Qts. I put all 5 in the jug in and it is just about a millimeter over the full mark. Oversize filter helps take up the slack.

depending on how much oil the cam/valvetrain holds, typically, you get less oil during oil change than what the manual specified.

It's not uncommon (my 2AZFE takes approx 4L worth of oil during oci, and my fit takes even less (approx 3.2L)

all of mine take slightly more than the manual says, from 4 to 8 ounces more to bring it up to the full mark

Using an "oversized" filter. My sump will hold 6 Quarts. If I leave the filter on and run the second oci....my sump will hold about 5 quarts. On the second run with the same filter, I top off, after I run it for a couple of hundred miles or so, with a half quart or less.

I bring it to full on level ground after starting it (then stopping it) and waiting a few minutes for the oil to drain. Jeep takes 6 QTs. I probably would not open another QT if it was only down a tiny bit from the top, if I was using QTs.

The QTs are so expensive compared to the 5 QT jugs at Walmart I buy an extra 5 QT jug every few oil changes so I never need to buy a QT.

I do keep a QT in the vehicle.

You should stick with 1. What the manual says, and 2. Use the dipstick to verify you are in range.

I have built lots of engines and in every case you have to determine the desired operating oil level and mark/etch the dipstick. The dipstick measurements are a good guide, but the specified quantity is what matters. When the oil pan is tilted even slightly and the dipstick enters the oil at an angle, really wide variations in measured oil elevation occur.

In many V-8 oil pans, a half quart either way is not significant. One quart high is starting to be significant on the basis of crank splash, but not likely to be an issue in most engines, as the oil would likely still be 1 to 2 inches below the crankshaft and oil pan lip.

The big Merc calls for 6 quarts, but it ends up being about 6.2 quarts. The impala calls for 4.5 quarts and it's usually right on.

Interesting... the "trusting" part of me would assume that the dipstick would hit the oil near the center of the pan, thus, if the car was not parked perfectly level the level read would not be greatly affected. So, does the dipstick typically pierce the oil level near the center of the pan or near the edge?

I think the dipstick variability is dependent on the vehicle. On my FS, it hits at the front of the pan and is totally susceptible to angle. My driveway is at an angle, so I actually have to check the oil elsewhere--but I now have a mental 'correction factor'. It reads about 4mm low when parked in my driveway.

The filter is obviously a variable in all of this. When Ford re-sized the 820S, I don't recall that they changed the oil capacity (could be wrong, though). The filter I'm using is the same size as the older, bigger 820S.

I don't think this engine holds very much oil when drained. Even if it's reading in the middle of the dipstick, I'll pull out over 6 qts during a change. Compared that to a K24, which seems to hold a fair bit of oil, even with a filter change.

It could just be in my head but it seems some manufactures are spot on while some take a little fine tuning. My Hondas and Chevys seem to always be just perfect at recommended amounts. My Fords always seem to require some adjustment...

I put 5 qts in the Granada. Dipstick will read full on level and 1/2 qt down in my driveway.

My Mazda calls for 4.25 qt however i've always found it takes 4.5 to get it just a fraction over the FULL mark on the dipstick.

Tribute calls for 5.2L. Last change, I put in about 5.6L, as I was trying to use an additive I had.

I believe over-filling by less than 0.5L isn't harmful, so in future changes I will most likely round-up the oil fill to 5.5L.

The 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5 takes 4.4

The 2011 Camry hybrid takes 4.5 IIRC

The 2011 2500HD Duramax takes 10

Adding those amounts generally puts the level right at full.

2000 Buick LeSabre owners manual says 4.5 quarts, but 5 quarts brings it up to the full line. Irregardless,
I've been filling it up with 6 quarts since I bought the car in 2005 with no adverse affects what-so-ever.

My Mom has a 2005 Freestyle which I do all of the service on, with hers 6 quarts and a FL-820S puts it right on the full line.

My F150 calls for 6 quarts, which puts it right in the middle of the cross-hatch. With an FL-820S 6.5 quarts puts it just below the Max dot, with an Amsoil EaO11 6.25 quarts does it.

Neither uses a drop of oil over ~8,000 miles.

The Mustang originally called for 5 quarts which put on the Max dot. When I swapped to a 4V (Mach 1 pan) the fill spec was 6 quarts but it took exactly 7 quarts, though I had a filter relocate with an FL-1A.

My Mustang 4.6 calls for 6 qts. That brings it to a half qt low point and thats where it stays till the next OCI. If I fill it all the way to the full mark it will burn the half qt real quick. When I first bought the car I thought it was an oil burner till I discovered the above.

To the full mark. I never need to add during a 6,000 OIL change as it is never down more that 1/8 inch or so.

I have the same situation with my Freestyle but I really don't burn any oil in an OCI. ( 6 months, anywhere from 2000-6000 miles). 6 quarts is somewhere near the middle to low in the operating range on the stick.

I change oil in my cars before the winter, well 50F is cold in So Cal, and I put in about 10-15% less than capacity. In 4-5 quarts sump I put in 4.5 quarts, in 8.5 quarts sump I put in 7.5 quarts. My reasoning is engine/oil get to operating temperature quicker with less oil. In the spring/summer I add the remaining to full level, 1/2 quarts for LS400 and S2000 and 1 quart into E430.

Its always preferable to fill to design capacity. If the dipstick is off you recalibrate the stick not change the amount.

The exception to this is when you change filters or pans in which case you would use an already calibrated stick to reach the new capacity.

Put just over 5 and a half quarts in my '94 F 150 with a 5.0L. Figured I would top it off after I started it up, since it was my first OC with this truck and didn't want to overfill. The owner's manual clearly states that the sump is 5 qts and to add whatever the oil filter capacity to the 5 qts. I used the big 'ol motorcraft filter, which has got to be near a quart. The dipstick shows overfilled, but at least it is still barely below the 'do not go over this line' line. So I guess it will be 5 qts including filter from now on. Go figure---

2010 Camry (2AR-FE) takes 5 quarts exactly and its right up to the full mark.
1995 Camry (5S-FE) takes 3.8 just like every other 5S I've ever maintained.
There are many (3 in my family, another 3 customer cars, plus the thousands of oil changes I did working at the dealer.)

My trucks are all 6 quarts, and it takes exactly 6 to get to the mark.

My playtoy takes 9 quarts, and since it has remote filters it can take a couple of short trips to get the sump level just right. I run it lower if it's being raced as it may smoke a bit if full to the line.

The SRT8 is supposed to take 7 but more like 6.75 or even 6.5 yields a perfect dipstick reading.

With no filter, the manual says 4.5 quarts. When I do an oil change, I often use oversized filters and it will then hold 6 quarts.

Wrangler says 4 qts, but it takes 4 1/2 to get it into the safe range.

GC says 6, and it's right about 1/2 way in the safe zone.

Dodge says 5, and measure the same as the GC with 5 quarts in.

G5 is right at full with 4.7L as manual states
G6 is usually very close with 3.8L as manual states but have put as much as 4.2L in to hiy full mark

I generally put in what's call for in the specs... If it's a little under or over I don't care, will add only if level falls to the add mark prior to next change...

How much you put in depends on how much you drain out.
A quick oil/filter change can easily leave in 200-400 mls of oil vs an overnight drain with the car jacked up (angled) to facilitate a more complete drain.

Yep, that's why I use my dipstick. My manual calls for 4.3L with oil filter change, the dipstick will show oil above the full mark, but if I put in 4L it is at max. or slightly below. Plus Im not gonna bother measuring 0.3 of a liter.

I also think that the design of the engine has something to do with this as well. On my Duratec 3.0, the drain plug is in the back and my driveway is at an incline. Typically, I take off the drain plug and filter, then go for a bike ride or something, then button it up. After an hour of (hot) draining, there's nothing coming out--not even drips. Other cars I change the oil on, I don't seem to get out that much.

I imagine this is the difference in the 5.9 versus 6.0 qt capacity that I see listed for my car.

I think the poster who suggested calibrating the dipstick around the fill capacity and not vise-verse is right on. I've probably been over-filling just a bit.

Yes it does; but you'll need to install an oil pressure gauge to understand what your car is saying to you.

It has everything to do with that.

For average street use just keep the level between the marks and there will never be an issue, but if you drive hard (corner hard and brake hard) with a wet sump system you may find oil pick-up issues at certain oil levels. In a couple of my cars I must have the oil at the full mark to avoid the problem and I only know it's a problem because I have an oil pressure gauge, an idiot light is too late.
Or if you upgrade to sticker tires thereby increasing the cornering g-forces you may have to overfill the sump to avoid oil starvation.

On the otherhand, in my Bimmer I keep the oil level on minimum during the winter to facilitate faster oil warm-up while leaving room in the sump to add a full litre of heavy oil in the summer to increse the viscosity of the bulk sump oil without doing a biannual oil change.

This reminds me of the old days at the strip. We routinely put less oil in the cars to keep the crank out of it. On some it made a difference and on others not a bit.

Then there was the road course, where I routinely overfilled my cars to compensate for the high cornering forces that can uncover the pickup.

2011 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.0T manual says 4.86 qt I just dump in 5 singles or the 5.1 jug and fill the filter up. It's at the top of the mark on the dipstick. I can't be bothered w/ the minute overage, and the driveway isn't flat and I drive it hard, yadda, yadda...

It is difficult for me to read the oil level on the dipstick in my '06 Avalon. It is one of those twisted cable types and no matter what I do, the oil smears well over the full mark even though I have only put in 6 qts of the 6 qts specified. Even after the oil starts to darken, it is hard to tell where the oil level is accurately. I finally just decided to put 6 qts in and only check to make sure some shows on the dipstick.

I pour 6 quarts in my CrownVic
6 quarts in the Fusion
5 quarts in the Ranger
Have not done the CTS yet; book says 6 quarts though.
Usually I just pour it in and dont bother checking it. Ive done it enough on those three to know it will be perfect with those amounts.

I know what you mean, I got one. The trick is to read the oil level when the engine is cold, the level is really easy to read then. I know it's not the what the manual specifies, but it's better than guessing.

I still don't see how MY car, in MY application would actually "care" or "know" the difference, meaning, would it last longer, use less / more fuel, have more / less horse power, eat through tires and brake pads less / more often, etc.? Sure, I may feel better seeing a difference in oil pressure reading, but what does it actually accomplish in my daily driver, if said pressure reading is within operating spec?

Well lesee, being that most cars on the road today don't have oil pressure gauge and the ones that do are either useless or ignored by the general driving public, no a gauge really isn't of much use(how many cars do you see setting along side the road because they didn't have a oil pressure gauge?)...

For the ones that want to push the limits of how thin of a oil can I safely get away with, yes they are a good instrument to have... Me, I tend to error on the side of caution so will bump my oils up a grade and not worry, neither of my daily drivers have a real oil pressure gauge and I don't care... My Marauder and '69 Fairlane do have gauges that verify my method is working, haven't lost a engine due to a oil related failure in the 45 years I've been owning vehicles...

For Chevy engines, there is an oil pump baffle plate (wet sump only) that sandwiches between the oil pump and keeps oil moderately low on drag strip launch.

For any type of closed circuit racing, an aftermarket baffled trap-door pan keeps the oil totally in control. And, most have built in windage trays and crank scrapers worth 30HP and up.

I know what you guys mean. My equipment has those types cause they are mostly cab over machines. They also have 5' plus dipsticks that are a pain to get out in one pull. My truck and car have the nice old flat ones so they are very easy to read. I bet I could read water level acurately with them.

Since the 'specified' 3.5 Quarts for the Civic brings the oil level to the UPPER mark on the dipstick, the manual is right on for this car.

That is checked after the oil change, idled for at least 5 minutes, then shut off for at least an hour.

I typically use the 'cold' reading of a morning before it has been ran to approximately keep the oil at the UPPER mark, of course this varies the actual amount since each oil filter may change the level(some more than others).

I'm sure this leaves room for more oil since if checking the oil hot/soon after driving the oil filter is holding more oil than when it's cold of a morning. This means the level on the dipstick in the morning 'could' be with a 'mostly' empty filter compared to a reading after idling(at least).
