First change from factory fill, OCI 542 miles. Stock Toyota 90915-20004 filter as delivered from factory. Stock air filter assembly. Started using FC at 62 miles and have used at every fill up.

8/15/2004
Second oil change. Castrol GTX 5w-30 oil and Toyota 90915-YZZD1 filter. No Lube Control yet. Still using Fuel Power on every fill. No make-up oil.

10/03/2004
Third oil change. Mobil 1 0w-40 oil and Toyota 90915-YZZD1 filter. Started Lube Control with 5 oz. at initial fill and 3 oz./1,000 miles.

I used the same Toyota oil filter but switched to Royal Purple Racing 21 this time around. I will go to 7,500 miles on the RP and continue with Fuel Power every fill-up and Lube Control at 5 oz. in initial fill and 3 oz./1000 miles.

All comments welcome, see you next OCI!

Your first two numbers are obviously due to break-in. However, it looks like M1 0w-40 now has your engine in good shape.

These Toyota engines are unreal. I'd just use Mobil 1 5w-30 IMO. This is the same engine in the new Tacoma.

Same here..no need for the 40 wt.. And notice that 40 wt. sheared back to a 30 wt. anyway. I think that 0W-40 Mobil 1 is the worst of Mobil 1's oils. I'd never use it.

I don't know what it is about all the manufacturers ratings ect ect the Mobil 0w-40 meets that people cannot seem to grasp

Read closely about this two year oil under correct conditions . Mobil 0w-40 is just unreal for a cost of under 5 bucks a quart

GM-LL-A-025 GM-LL-B-025 " diesel " is a tough spec ..... up to two years in service type tough plus look at the fine machines across the world leaving where they are made with the 0w-40 as the factory fill . There's a reason for it beyond money I believe

Here's the data sheet from the UK

More importantly, notice that Toyota's 30 wt sheared back to a 20 wt!! This engine must've been designed to shear oil for HT/HS ratings tests or something. You'd better get rid of it right away!!

Anyone notice how low the wear numbers are? This kind of make the point of not needing any type of long drawn out elaporate break in!! So much for needing 10,000,20,000,50,000 miles for an engine to stabilize!

I have noticed that most of your top notch imports have simalar results early on. It really does not matter if it is German,Japanese,Korean etc...... It apears that almost all of your modern engine designs are good to go with very little break in.

I think it is kind of ironic that some people with 10,000 to 20,000 miles on an engine (especialy GM products) will blame continued break in for bad UOA results!Seems to me that the blame should rest squarely with the manufacture!

John, yes and no. The imports clearly show lower wear metals, but I'll take an LS1 or Jeep 4.0L, two engines that show a lot of wear metals, and put them up against any import for longevity. Good point though.

Buster-- I will take a Toyota 4.7 against your Jeep 4.0. We will drive it 150,000 miles and compare operating costs. Such as valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, injector problems, etc. I have worked on too many of these Jeep motors. Yes they will run for a long time, but the little things that go bad over time is amazing. I changed the oil on my friends 02 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0. The power steering puymp was leaking, valve cover gasket leaking and the cooler lines from the trans to radiator were dripping coolant. I cant imagine, nor have I ever experienced a Toyota with these problems with only 18k miles on it. I lowered the hood and told him to take it to the dealer. That should be interesting.
