My son just bought a 2001 VW Jetta with the 1.8 turbo and 110k miles. Not a bad looking car for the money. Problem is the oil light keeps flashing. He looked on a VW forum and someone else had a similar issue. Revving the engine to 2500 rpm, per someone from the VW forum, made the light quit flashing. It worked for my son's car as well. Recommendations were to 1)replace the thermostat 2)replace the oil sensor or 3)change to a thicker oil. Took it in today and had the oil sensor replaced. No help. It is unknown what weight oil is in there now. Engine specs 5W-40. Car seems to run fine. Can't see any sludge or deposits via the oil fill hole. Anybody have this engine with a similar problem? If so, what solved the problem? Also plan to change the oil with Rotella 5W-40. Anybody got a better recommendation? Any help would be appreciated.

Rotella T6 5w40 would work well. It's a strong oil and priced well. Proven track record.

Mobil 1 0w40, Pennzoil Platium/Ultra 5w40 (hard to find on shelves), or Castrol Syntec 0w30 are all VW-approved and safe.

If you are concerned about sludge, pull the valve cover and take a look for yourself.

+1 Get a vw 502 oil in there. The previous owner may have simply used regular 5w-30, which does not meet VW specs. Also, Castrol 5w-40 is a good choice and available at AZ.

I would change to an approved oil. Chances are whats in there shouldn't be in there. My buddy got a notice in the mail a few months ago regarding the 1.8T. If any engine repairs were made to send them to Audi for a refund... same engine that's in your Jetta. Since getting the notice I had him run Mobile 0W40. He had his light come on a few times... so far hasn't come back.

A double dose of ARX might help.. I used it in my Passat at about 55K before switching to synth and the car was running sweetly at 105K when I traded her last fall. Which proves nothing, of course.

But you may very well have to replace the oil pump / pick up tube eventually. Improper oil = clogged tube. Too bad, that is one sweet little motor.

I knew some guys who would have the oil light come on because the electrical system was glitchy, not because the engine had oiling problems.

That in mind, the #1 cause of engine problems I see in the VW 1.8T is using non-synthetic oil.

Totally true. But the fix is not some wonder treatment in a can. You need to remove the oil pan and fix the root problem. Not a hard job, and no cost involved other than a few hours of work

maybe it is ok but my sisters 2002 just died at 85k due to crud in engine...vw will cover it 100% if you have oil recpts, 50% if you do not

Mfrank:
I had a 91 jetta and put 230k on her before I gave her away. I once had the oil light flicker when using a off brand of 10w40. I then changed to castrol 10w30 and she ran like a top year around and no other problems. If you decide to pull the pan you might as well put in a new pump and tube just to make sure that either one isn't bad. If the pump is worn bad once the oil gets hot and thins out you will lose enough pressure to set off your sensor. I agree with the other people who said to use a standard oil pressure guage if this happens again to eliminate the possible guage problem.
