This was my first oil change. Put in with 5,000miles on the car and removed at 10,000 miles. Castrol SLX Pro 5w30 in a 2010 VW GTI 2.0TSI. Any thoughts (especially RE the aluminum found)?

Engine is gonna wear in for 20K miles, maybe a bit more (some up to 40K) miles.

I'd be more worried about the low TBN after only 5K miles.

+1

This particular oil has a relatively low starting TBN of about 6.4, I've been told. Is that anything to worry about? What does that mean in layman's terms? And why should I he concerned about it?

Just means given your driving conditions (and partially due to US engine fuel management) you're pretty much limited to 5K mile intervals. You could use an older, higher TBN oil (A 502.00 0w40 or 5w40) and may be able to go the normal 10K mile interval.

Check your owner's manual to be sure 502.00 oils are still allowed, though.

This oil held up nice. It's still a solid 30 weight. Maybe the TSI isn't as rough on oil as the FSI.
