The mild increase in silicon was the only unusual finding here. It could show some dirt getting past
the air filter, so we suggest having a look at this. It could also be harmless sealants used when replacing the
cam gasket. Wear still looks good, so we doubt any serious bearing or piston slap problems are present.
The oil was normal in viscosity and free of any fuel dilution or anti-freeze. Insolubles were low at 0.4%
showing good oil filtration. Other than the silicon, this engine appears perfectly normal here at 167,900 total
miles. Another good report.

I replaced the cam cover gasket at 3k miles into the run, started leaking pretty bad, appears to have sealed up now, consumption is almost non existent now. Top off oil was 1 qt 10-30 PP, at the same time as gasket replacement. Oil level was about 3/4 up on hash marks when changed. I have now jumped on the Ultra bandwagon to keep it "factory clean". I changed the oil because I had the time and it was about the same interval as last time to compare the 2. I may run this Ultra quite a bit longer.

Looks good.

If cost was an issue (wth top-offs and all), the the T6 would be the ticket.

Should be interesting to compare the PU to these oils - definetly go at least 10k on the Ultra.

Nice report! How did you like the 'thicker' oil? Any differences from your senses?

All three are excellent oils, so you can't go wrong.

I would also like to know how the car seems to run on the thicker oil. I am always trying to figure out if its worth trying to use thicker oil in my 1.9 or just using the spec'd 5W30 and possibly have to add a little more. The consumption has actually been getting better lately for some reason. I am not adding as often as I used to, just using 5W30 or 10W30 Formula Shell.

Cost of the oil really isn't an issue, the main reason I started running synthetic a couple years ago was to try to clean it up and it has, looking at the rocker arms and top of the engine from when I had the cam cover off all the varnish that covered everything before is now gone from the past 40k miles of syn oil use. It started as an experiment, nothing to lose but a few bucks right? and so far it was worked well for me. I'm not really into extended service oil changes, just wanted to use some good cleansing oil.

So far I have used Valvoline syn, Mobil 1 EP, GC, and T6. the GC and T6 seem pretty similar, it would be hard to say which is better. for year around I guess I would lean towards the GC, but I don't think you could go wrong with either. I was going to try PP 5-20 for this winter, but I finally found some PU in 5 qt jugs for $25 and couldn't resist. I have noticed a slight increase in fuel economy switching back to a 5-30.
