Mopar Filter Questions

I know the specified Mopar oil filter for my 2003 3.3l is #05281090. What about using either a Mopar P4452890 or a Mopar 5037836AA oil filter? What is the difference between these last two and could I use either one in place of the standard 05281090?
 
I don't know the Mopar P/Ns, but your 3.3 officially takes the equivalent of a Purolator PL14670, which was the same as the 3.5L in my wife's Eagle Vision used to take. I always ran a PL3001 in that car. The 3001 is the equivalent of the Motorcraft FL-1A, AC PF2, Wix 51515, etc. which used to be the standard full-size filter on loads of engines back in the 60s. The bypass pressure, gasket diameter, and thread pitch are all compatible with the 14670 filter, but you get a larger filtration area by a bit more than a factor of 2. The caveat is whether or not it will physically fit because its both longer and I think a bit bigger in diameter than the 14670.

If either of the Mopar filters you're talking about cross-references to a PL3001, then I'd recommend you use it (or else just use a 3001) ;-)

I found out that the Mopar 5037836AA oil filter was developed in a collaboration between Dodge Viper engineers and Wix. My dealer had one in stock and it is quite a bit heavier than the standard 1090 Mopar filter. It also has a different inlet hole pattern, different top base plate, and looks different inside from what I could see peering in the center hole. Physically, it is the same size as the 1090 - so it is not as big as the FL1a. It has a white can with Mopar and Viper imprinted on the outside.

The standard 05281090 has been made by Champ and Purolator to Mopar OEM standards. The Mopar 5037836AA is definitely made by Wix - it has the Wix 6-holed base plate, etc. It is a much heavier filter, but I don't know how the internal construction or materials varies from the standard - but it is made to Viper standards.

The diameter of the PL30001/PH8A/51515/Fl-1A is the exact same as the PL14670/PH116/51068/FL820, it is just longer.

You can use P4452890 in place of 05281090. Let me find a pic I have of both cut open and I will post it for you to see.

They also look similar but the filter media is taller in the P4452890 as well as having more pleats.

It looks to me from your pictures that the P4452890 achieves its taller filter media by eliminating the top bypass valve and perhaps replacing it with a dome valve. Is this the case?

I have a 2000 Dakota 3.9 that I think this filter would fit. Would it be able to do a 5,000 to 9,000 OCI?

Is it a daily driver and what's your annual mileage? That will tell you if it will make the mileage you quote.

Yes it is a daily driver with mostly highway miles. 18,000 miles a year. Thank you for your help!
 
It should make the same 6months that it would @ OEM mileage recommendations. You're just putting more hollow miles in between.

You are correct that they put the bypass in the dome instead of thread end but the can itself is longer on the P4452890 filter then the 05281090 filter. I can measure the difference if you would like.

The 05281090 can is 3.75 inches and the P4452890 can is 4.25 inches. The height of the pleats for the 05281090 is 2.375 inches and the height of the pleats for the P4452890 is 2.75 inches. Also the filter is .125 inches wider for the P4452890 than the 05281090.
