The quart of Castrol Edge 0W-20 tested was purchased online from Advance Auto Parts. VOA is by Dyson Analysis. It appears to be primarily Group III oil, but the surprise is the titanium additive instead of something conventional like ZDDP.

I searched BITOG for references to oils containing titanium. About a dozen threads on ConocoPhillips use of "liquid titanium" (mostly in Kendall GT-1) from additive supplier Afton Chemical. Is Castrol using the same source? I don't know. The story was broken by Tom NJ on Nov 18, 2008:

For easy comparison within the same chart, I've included the other 0W-20 oils previously tested:

Hmm, strange. Tbn #'s are kind of low aren't they? Edge is using Na too.

Where is the MOLY

Not much showing up in the VOA

Seems sodium and titanium are replacing moly?

Now we'll have to wait for a UOA to see if it is any good.

SWEET 40C visc! I wonder how long it'll be before we have an oil with a sub 30 visc at 40C.

If somebody sends me 3 1/2 quarts, I'll be more than happy to send off for a uoa. I could have 5k miles on it by mid august.

LOL Good try though!

I too am loving that 40c viscosity! That'll make a great oil for short tripped engines that rarely get fully warmed up!

It will also make for a great oil during the Wintertime, especially for anyone up North.

Thanks Bruce for doing this.

The 40C and 100C viscosities are lower than what Castrol claims (38.3 cSt and 8.85 cSt respectively) but regardless, this oil has the lowest start-up viscosity of any of the high VI 20wt's.

The use of titanium in place of moly is certainly interesting and in that respect makes Castrol's oil not another Japanese OEM 0W-20 clone.

I'd certainly be interested in trying it but AFAIK Castrol is not selling it in Canada yet.

Really a let down re. add pack. The cold start up advantage is good but hardly enough to get excited, the titanium replacing the moly do I hear Conoco ? Seems like BP pulling one over on us, along with ......another time for that.

I was a little disappointed by the add pack myself, but a friend said all the magic can be in the base stock. Titanium might be a good replacement for moly too? I guess once the UOA's come in we'll know for sure.

Yes the Edge 0W-20 grade although I haven't contacted Castrol Canada to see if they have any plans of making it available here any time soon.
Edge 5W-20 is of course available everywhere Edge is carried and it has a 40C vis lower than most 20wt's at 42.7 cSt and a high VI of 175. But then why bother with it when you can get Toyota's 0W-20 at have the price. Even Honda's 0W-20 is a bargain compared to Edge.

I grabbed the Edge 0W20 when it was $29.99 for 5 qts with the top of the line Bosch filter. Shame you guys in Canada can't get the deals we get, otherwise I'd be buying the Toyota oil too. What is interesting is the 0W20 Edge is $.50 cheaper than 5W20 at AAP.

The other Edge VOAs reported (5W-30 and 10W-30) both have significant moly and boron, while this 0W-20 VOA has neither. Weird.

5W-30 Edge VOA

10W-30 Edge VOA

Is Castrol using the same source?

At last count, there are three NA suppliers of Titanium and at least one European supplier.

Titanium and Tungsten additives are antioxidant and antiwear agents; I.E., friction modifiers and antioxidants good at very high temperatures.

Bummer voa on Edge what does it contain other than sodium? Looks like GTX Wow makes you hold up a bit.
