This can be a place to post our latest small engine oil change. I guess spring time would be the best time to start a thread like this.

I figure it would be good to include the engine info, brand and weight of oil, and filter where applicable. Here goes mine:

Also got two new spark plugs, new fuel filter, cleaned and re-oiled pre-filter, and a wash/wax.

I know it is overkill, but I paid more for this mower than I did for my first car. It gets fresh synthetic each spring (the manual actually recommends synthetic), Mobil up until this year.

Thanks to the bitoger's that suggested the MC 400 filter in my earlier post cheers

I changed it out at the end of last season.
I was using Quaker State Synthetic 10w30, but I put in
15oz 15w40 Rotella, 1oz Marvel Mystrey Oil.
It smoked a bit at the initial seasonal start, only took 3 pulls, but soon afterward it stopped and ran normal.

I have had the mower for one season, a Toro with B&S engine, and after a couple hours of usage I plan on dumping the current mix and going to Rotella T6. At the end of last season I was still getting some silvery debires out with a hot oil change.

Supertech 10w30 in an mtd yardman. I believe it's a briggs and stratton engine. Older model, got it for free from the Dad. After oil change, started on first pull of season.

Ehhh small engine? I hope this qualifies!

I have a 3 or 4 year old Yard Machines riding mower, 38" 13.5HP Briggs engine. Bought it last year off craigslist. The seller said he had "just changed the oil with the briggs & stratton brand oil" and I said "thats great, but its getting drained as soon as I get it home and refilled with Amsoil" ... tongue2

So anyways, last year I ran 10w/30 Amsoil synthetic small engine oil, put about ~75 hours on the riding mower (200x100 lot), changed it out today and it still looked pretty good!!

So to answer the question, I refilled with Amsoil's 10w/30 small engine synthetic oil again grin

Yesterday, April 13 2010: 3 yr old 48" cut Sears w/hydro trans, 24 HP Briggs V-twin. Drained old oil(Rotella 15w40, had about 30 hrs on it, looked OK) & removed old filter. Refilled with Chevron Delo 15w40, & installed a red textured Advance Auto Suregrip? 3614 filter. Also installed a freshly serviced air filter & pre-cleaner. Plus removed & cleaned deck, installed a new set of Gator blades, & greased fittings on jackshaft spindles.
Today did much mowing. 8^P

I just put 20 oz. of a 4:1:1 mix of ATF, SeaFoam, and MMO in the crankcase of an old snapper edger that I found on the side of the road this evening. She ran pretty well after a new sparkplug and gas tank. Tomorrow, I'm going to let it get up to operating temperature, then drain the mix and refill with some RTS.

The other edger I found has the same mix in the crankcase, but it is seized up. The combustion chamber is filled up and soaking, too. It's a mix that's worked for me in the past.

Put the 2005 Toro Snowblower to bed last weekend. Gave the Techumseh Snow King HMSK90 (IIRC) a fresh oil change using 5w30 Motorcraft Oil. Goes in everything else around here too! (Except the lawnmower - that wakes up in a week or so...)

How old is your owner's manual? I thought recommendations for non-detergent oil went out 40 years ago, and I thought Honda recommended 10W30.

I changed Amsoil SM HP 10w-30 out of my 9 HP snowblower and 4 HP Honda edger. Oil looked pathetic. Valves sounded bad...even thought I was going to throw a rod in the new Honda 9HP.

Now...5w-30 Royal Purple SL grade in both engine. Run great and quiet.

Never an SM oil again!

Sounds somewhat like me. When I ran out of my old stock of M1 5W30 I was using in my mowers and other OPE, I went to the M1 10W30 High Mileage oil, which is still SL.

No kidding, how old is that? I just purchased a push mower with the GCV160 (not GVC160) and it recommends 10w30 for most temperatures.

OK, I dropped the oil, 2 hrs total on new machine 5 yrs old. The nubs are still on the tread patch. It would have been better if I had tube to put on the easy drain. So all was good til' it got low nd dribbled all over the place. The drain filled a coffee can up to the last rib before the rim. over 2 qt. Mystic 10w30 blend QS-3600 Fresh.

The one time I overfilled a lawnmower engine it ran rough, and oil started ooozing out the air filter....No need to overfill a small engine.

I just checked out some Supertech diesel 15w40's....the "premium" jug is CJ/SM, the cheaper diesel is $9 a jug her in Canada and CH/SL rated.
Guess which one I will be running this summer in my OPE's...

SEARS Eager 1 Tecumseh: NAPA 30W

I had a friend that worked for John Deere repairing mowers. He said that you would be sick if you knew how many homeowners never change their lawnmower oil. That was the majority of their engine problems.

After reading a lot of this thread, I decided to do a lawn mower OCI. It's just a cheap Murray mower - 20" cut with B&S 3.5 HP motor. I put in fresh Castrol 10-30.

Was talking to a guy at a local muffler shop about how many people at BITOG use 10-30,. etc.,m in their lawn mower motors, and he said "you should NEVER use 10-30 in a mower motor, period, and when I told him I've learned a lot of good things at BITOG, he looked angry, so I didn't press the issue. After the leftover GTX 10-30 and 10-40 is used up, I'll put Rotella 15-40 in it. thumbsup

Drained out 10+ year old oil from my 1981 Craftsman push mower with 3hp Briggs & Stratton. Refilled it with bulk 15w40 at my work. Then got the engine to run on gas poured in carb, would not run off gas in tank even after flushing it out. Took carb apart and cleaned it, after getting the mower running properly for a short period of time we drained it again and refilled with bulk 15w40.

I'm going to let it get used for a little more before draining a 3rd time and putting in Mobil 1 5w30.

BOLENS riding mower with B.&S. 13.5 h.p. engine . 3rd O.C. since new . SHELL full synthetic 5w-30 . Overfilled by 4 oz.. Should I be concerned ? Hate to drain it . It's messy due to the drain plug being at the bottom R.H.side and need the plastic drainer that came with it . Doesn't fit tight to the block and oil leaks on frame and under the engine . Royal pain the _ _ _ to clean up . Done with O.C. until end of OCTOBER or so . Supposed to be above average temps in the N.E. through OCTOBER , looks to be a long season of mowing .

The temp was up in the high eighties around here today.

Usually I wait till it down in the twenties in December before I get around to getting the snowblowers ready.

Fooled 'em this year, lol.

Felt bad for one of the work Cushman Trucksters, they can go 300-400 hours without service. 18 hp Kohler V twin

So I noticed that this one had 195 hours on the oil and the level was at the bottom of the hatches.

So I just dropped the oil in the pan and filled it up with one qt of HD30W and the balance of HD 10/30. Better than nothing!

Just changed my Snow King 7hp engine (22 years old), ariens sno throw. Oil hasn't been replaced in a long time (5 seasons, maybe). very black and acidic I'm sure. drained.

dumped in an old bottle of cheap oil I had lying around... ran for 10 minutes, drained... more very black. Put in 1 qt mobil clean 5000 5w-30. Found out it is about 12 ozs too much, will drain before I start the engine.

I will change this every 25 hrs or 1 season from now on.

Honda HRX Versamower.
1st year I used the oil that came with it (I think it was Honda 10-30 but not real sure; was a little red bottle).
2nd year I used Shell Rotella 15w-40 that was left over from one of the motorcycle oil changes. Later I changed that bike to Rotella 5w-40 synthetic, so then I used the left over for the mower again. It did swell last couple years.
This last spring, on the other motorcycle, I switched it to Amsoil 20w-50, so again I used left over for the Honda mower. I can't believe I'm using Amsoil for a mower, but I like it in the Harley, I figured might as well.
I already bout Amsoil for the spring change on the Harley, and I'll use it also for the mower again.
My mower gets better oils & changes than some folks I know use in their cars & equipment.

Just picked up a John Deere R70 rider for $130. It has an 8HP Briggs engine. Drained the sludgy crud out and flushed a little supertech 5w30 through it before filling it with Rotella T5 10w30.

B&S Quantum 4hp, mower in storage for over 5+ yrs, properly stored with fogging oil, B&S fuel stabiliser in gas tank, gas cap sealed with thick plastic sheet, etc.

Took it out and then drained the oil (refilled with Vavoline 10W30 white jugs, cannot locate my WM jug of diesel 15W40 oil). Drained the gas (yellow, a bit gummy but not bad for 5+yrs in an unconditioned(high humidity) shack; replaced spark plug with a new Champion, etc. Started like a charm.

Put it into service immediately during Sunday for the first mow of the season, got the job done relatively quickly.

Need new mulching blade though (original one worn).

Changed oil today in a 35 year old briggs 3 and a half hp. I put some old Case/IH branded oil in it. I have no clue who makes it. My Dad gave it to me long long ago. Its straight 30 wt. Ran the motor 5 minutes at most and it was pitch black. LOL

Switched to G-oil Bio Synthetic SAE 30 in the Troy-Bilt.

I put the very clean used QS syn from the Troy-Bilt in the old Murray.

It takes 20oz so I bought the 48 oz container. The smaller container only holds 18oz. I got enough for another oil change plus enough to top off my side discharge '96 Murray 3.5 B&S.

Toro Recycler with Briggs engine:
Mobil 1 10w40 High Mileage

40+ year old Briggs walk behind edger the same
Mobil 1 10w40 High Mileage

Funny the stuff is rated SL, must be a little old.
I chose this because some of the seals on the edger are leaky and 1 quart is enough to do both the edger and mower.

Craftsman riding mower, Rotella T6. The engine has almost 30 hours now, ff was changed at 5 hours with Rotella T1 30w. I was able to save a small fortune by using the purolator filter over the B&S, $3.95 vs $14.99

gravely pro 50in walk behind

out: who knows? it was pure sludge. i actually had to fill the crankcase with gas to thin it out enough to drain.

in: Quakerstate torque power 10/30 from a sale at autozone. ran for a couple hours and changed again just to make sure all the goop was out.

changed the air and fuel filter as well as plugs and rebuilt the carb. added half a bottle gumout regaine to the tank to clean out some carbon.

results: one mower pulled out of the grave and brought back to life

Changed the oil in my Grasshopper today...5w40 Schaeffer and a Purolator filter...this is the second OCI/FCI I've done in ten hours of use to flush out the previous (unknown) fill.

Just installed new tires today too...

I also cut the filter open, it was clean except for a real faint outline where I had magnets installed.

Did changes on five things this weekend. Pennzoil 10w30 in the 17hp lawn tractor at the cabin, Pennzoil HD30 in the Briggs Classic powered lawnmower at the cabin, Mobil Clean 5000 10w30 into the power washer with the Honda GC190, Pennzoil HD30 into the Briggs powered Toro Super Recycler, and Pennzoil 5w30 into the 9hp Tecumseh on the snowblower before I put it away for the summer...

The 3.5 briggs on my rotor tiller got topped up with Rotella T 0W40. Its what was open on my shelf at the time. I also topped up the gearbox with some ultramar 80W90 gear oil.
I had stored it this winter tipped forward so oil had gradually seeped out and into the cylinder. The first few pulls had oil running out of the exhaust, but after a few more pulls it started up and burned out the extra oil in 30 seconds. Tough little motor!

Tecumseh HMSK80, 26 oz Mobil Clean 5000 5w20. Put away for summer. Zero oil usage last winter.

Honda GX25 on a new FG110 mini-tiller, 3 oz Mobil Clean 5000 10w30. Changed after first tank of fuel, oil was silver colored already.
