Hopefully this isn't a re-post but I see that the XW-20 oils now are shown in the PDS. Notice how low the viscosity of the 0W-20 is at 40C: 38.62 cst. Yet the viscosity at 100C is 8.85 cst so the VI is really high at 220! I used a VI calculator to get the VI since Castrol didn't provide it.

Those 40c and 100c specs sound just like the Toyota 0w20! Interesting! I love the idea of more 0w20s becoming available, and would love to see one come out with an even lower 40c viscosity. I wonder if it would be possible to see one with a 40c viscosity of 30-35cst? (while still having a 100c viscosity of around 8 to 8.5)

SYNERGYN For Comparison Only

Where did you see this info? On the link provided in the first post it shows the 40c viscosity as 38.62, not 48.2

edit-I just noticed that's the specs for Synergen, it's too bad their 40c viscosity is so much higher.

That Edge 5W-30 is some thin stuff, for a 5W-30.

It's even thinner than SSO 0W-30, which has a 40C visc. of 56.56.

I think this one looks pretty good.

Have you guys seen this Edge 0W20 in stores yet?

Well that's it guys, Castrol is the first formulator outside of Japan to offer a comparable product to the Toyota brand 0W-20.
Even their PDS says it's specifically for Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Acura applications.

And as JAG pointed out, with a VI of 220 they have out done Toyota (Nippon Oil) with their VI of 214 and of course Honda's (Idemitsu) paltry VI of "only" 200.
My guess is that it also will contain a boat load of Moly as well but at least here in Canada it will still undoubtly be 2 to 3 times the price of the Toyota original.

Now that Castrol has met the Toyota challenge I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Pennzoil and others join the fray. The question I have is, which oil will retain the most of it's super high VI in service? And the only way to determine that is to have both 40C and 100C viscosity measures done in UOA, and that leaves out Blackstone Labs.

These are interesting times for us motor oil addicts.

I still can't believe with the intro of Ultra, Pennzoil didn't come out with a 0w20 offering. Or at least get PP 0w20 into the stores.

OK, so we have CE that tailors to US makes, we have CE that tailors to Asian makes. When will we have CE that tailors to zee German makes? I'm feeling left out...

Castrol Edge's 5W-20 has a very decent VI as well at 175 which is higher than any other OTC 5W-20.
But since it has a lower 100C vis at 8.34 cSt vs 8.85 cSt for the 0W-20 grade it better be cheaper and/or a lot more shear resistant otherwise it is a redundant product made for marketing purposes only.
