Michigan born but my heart belongs in dixie
I have a 89 4x4 Ford Ranger with the 2.9liter 179 cubic inch V6 and automatic transmission. Also it has 4.10 gears in the axles. So it skins about 2 grand at double-nickle. If that help you guys help me choose an oil. I ussually run it at 50 with the cruise on. On the E-way I will run it up to 80 plus some times when the cruise isn't set. If I use the cruise on the E-way I set it at 70-75. This engine has 140K on it and doesn't use any oil to speak of. Maybe a quart every oil service of 3k. I have a few dozen Super Tech st43 filter I got for 50 cents a piece so I will be using one of them. I was thinking some 5W-20 since I have three quarts of valoline on the shelf. I was think after this oil service of using GC 0W-30 would these be good chooses. As it is winter in michigan. It can and will see 0 degrees many mornings. Since I am seeing these temp should I just break down and use the 5W-20 in my grandma's escort and get the GC 0W-30 for this oil service.

I forgot to mention that this engine is pritty clean but like all fords it does have noisy lifters. They are not to loud just at a cold start. Other then then they are quiet enough you can not hear them in the cab just outside. It doesn't leak any oil just a tiny amount out of the tappet covers. Not enough for me to be scared to use a good syn oil.

Hmmm, I don't think I'd use a 5w20 in that engine. GC would certainly suit the engine much better than the Valvoline 5w20. 2000 at 55mph with 4.10s? How big are your tires?

Ya 2 Grand at 55, 55. Ford now recpmmends 5W-20 for this engine on there website. And since it has done a wonderful job in other vehicles I was considering using it since I have some on my shelf. I hate those 4.10 gears. The best gas milage I could get was 14.1mpg. Thats right 14.1mpg. In 2wd at 50mph no wind to speak of empty with the tailgate off. And thats the very best that Icould ever get. And that was e_way with the cruise on. Normally I am avaraging about 12mpg in 2wd and about 8-9 in 4wd.

Wouldn't use 5w20 in the 89 Ranger. The 5w20 was really for 01 and up on the Fords.Depending on the year for grandmas escort> if it is 01 or higher the 5w20 should be ok.The 5w20 should be a synthic blend and not straight dino.

The 89 Ranger should be using 5w30 or 10w30.
