A clogged IAC will cause the car to stall while making a sudden stop (traffic light) but your check engine light will not turn on.

Same thing happened to our old 98 Civic EX.

Interesting redundancy. I wonder in retrospect if I had one of those thermostatically controlled fast idle valves on my old 89 mazda 323, thing would idle at up to 3500 RPM in the cold! (to heat up the cat.) If it could have been separated from the normal computer controlled idle speed valve, it could have been plugged. wink

Depending on the year, www.cb7tuner.com has a lot of good info. Somewhere on there I posted the link to or a bunch of TSBs, one of which involved troubleshooting erratic idle.
