Anyone have any more info or experience with this oil? There was talk of this being Citgo SynDurance. SynDurance is CJ-4/SM, but this stuff is CI-4 Plus/SL I believe, so I'm guessing it's not the same. I don't see any Citgo or Mystik oils that match it.

I have been thinking of switching to it year-round for my 1996 BMW 318ti. Good or bad idea? Would this be too thick for Minneapolis winters? I will start at -20F or colder once or twice per year. -10F to -15F probably a dozen times or so.

I have 187,000 miles and will drive it until at least 250,000, but I'm not willing to pay $6+/quart for the BMW LL-01/ACEA A3 oils I've been using for years. Mobil1 0w-40, Syntec/GC 0w30, Total Quartz Energy 9000 0w-30, etc...

This oil is still $2.59/quart at Mills Fleet Farm. $20.69 per 2 gallon jug.

Thanks!

I can't find another 5w-40 oil that is not "full" synthetic. Somehow this manages it while being a blend. The Mystik blend HDEO is a 15w-40 which I though this might be.

Also, this oil is NOT licensed to display the API Service Symbol while six other (all?) Farm Rated brand oils do.

Is something fishy, or is this possibly a full synthetic oil labeled "blend" for marketing reasons?

http://eolcs.api.org/DisplayLicenseInfo.asp?LicenseNo=0508

I still plan on putting it in my BMW when I'm due for a change. I will do a UOA.

If it says it's a "synthetic blend" then it has more Grp. I or II oil than a "full synthetic". Which still has some mineral oil, in order to solubilize some additives if nothing else.
However, the "Group" classification definitions are on the basis of viscosity index, high VI being better. In order to have a given VI, a "synthetic blend" will contain more VII (viscosity index improver, a long chain polymer) than a "full synthetic". This is what people complain about shearing, and when it does viscosity at 100 C. drops. Not a really big problem, xW40s typically shear to the high end of the xW30 range, but people don't like the idea of it. Some engines shear oil much more than others, especially Powerstrokes due to the HPOP (high pressure oil pump for unit injectors).
FWIW, in your nice little high performance car I'd use an ACEA A3/B4 oil. But the 5W40 syn blend you're looking at has the critical characteristic: HTHS>3.5 cP @ 150 C. Because it's an HDEO.

I e-mailed Mills Fleet Farm at they said they contacted the manufacturer and were given this info. This is the EXACT same text description as the Citgo SynDurance 5w-40 and Mystik JT-8 SYNTHETIC 5W-40. All they did is replace the name of the product in each description. They did not include the "TYPICAL PROPERTIES" section. Makes sense that this would be the same oil as the SynDurance and JT-8 Synthetic 5w-40.

I'll give it a try. It's $2.59/quart vs. Rotella T Synthetic at $5.00/quart

Mills Fleet/Farm

DESCRIPTION:
The design of FARM RATED EXTREME DUTY Engine Oil SAE 5W-40 utilizes premium synthetic base stocks to improve high and low temperature properties. Poly-alpha olefin synthetic components.
(PAOs) give the best low temperature performance while minimizing volatility. The careful balance of synthetic components gives improved fuel economy; improved cold temperature performance and improved engine drain interval optimization capabilities.

The industry faces continuing challenges with new emission regulations. The advanced additive
approach used in FARM RATED EXTREME DUTY Engine Oil SAE 5W-40 addresses the engine needs of the future, including Heavy Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems, Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF?s), and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC?s).

FARM RATED EXTREME DUTY Engine Oil SAE 5W-40 is designed to exceed the performance requirements of API CJ-4 and engine Manufacturers specifications.

PERFORMANCE
BENEFITS:
• Promotes fuel savings
• Provides year-round engine protection for fleets operating in wide temperature conditions
• Permits quick-fill lubrication flow during cold weather start-up
• Exhibits excellent high temperature wear protection
• Eliminates seasonal changeover and inventory problems when going from SAE 10W-30 in winter to 15W-40 in the summer
• Helps avoid engine damage from using cold weather starting aids such as ether
• Reduces dependency on engine block heaters
• Provides drain interval optimization capability
• Promotes longer engine life
• Improves equipment productivity and service availability

RECOMMENDED
FOR:
Equipment recommending CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, API CI-4,
CH-4, CG-4, API SM, SL, SJ (gasoline engines)
Caterpillar ECF-3, ECF-1
Cummins CES 20076, 20071 and 20081
Detroit Diesel 93K214, 93K215, 93K218

Mack EO-O Premium Plus (07)
Mack EO-N Premium Plus (03) and EO-M Plus
ACEA E3 and E5 performance
Daimler Chrysler 228.3
Volvo VDS-3, VDS-4

APPLICATIONS:
FARM RATED EXTREME DUTY Engine Oil SAE 5W-40 is ideal for engines operating in a wide temperature range, thereby avoiding the use of SAE 10W-30 in winter and changing to 15W-40 during summer months. Examples of such extreme service applications include emergency vehicles, vehicles with frequent cool down/restart cycles, refrigeration, generator sets, and standby engines.

cool nice to see some action going on this thread, i've never used it yet but you never know.

I have used the 10w30 HDEO in several vehicles, just never splurged for 40 weight when its not really required anywhere.
