Additives have much more to do with wear protection than does base oil type.

Most likley the cheapest properly rated oil would allow 99.675% of our vehicles we drive "with proper care" to the junkyard.

I'd like to see some documentation to support this.

Also, how much "better" is GrpIII vs. Grp IV?

You know what, I was slightly wrong. PAOs have much lower film strength than esters, but not necessarily than other kinds of oils.

Here's one of my references. It's a Citgo presentation and is a better summary than I can provide: http://www.lubesandgreases.com/officefor...cations-WSO.ppt

I read something here once that said that group III oils can be formulated to have better seal compatibility, film strength, and solvency than PAO. Can't find that article, though...

Mobile 1 is mobil 1 once it`s moving around in your engine when you start it. It`s then "mobile" :^)

The question becomes how much "film strength" is needed. I am unaware of any standardized test that determines film strength. If you know of one, please post it. Your link also (accuratly) states that PAO needs some ester content for seals and solubility. So we will never be dealing with a pure PAO oil anyway.

The fact is that PAO is used in gear lubes...the ultimate in "film strength" applications. If PAO films were a problem, they wouldn't be used there.

All of this base oil "film strength" talk is fascinating considering no one is talking about VII content that DOES affect wear rates under extreme conditions.

What I`d really love to know is,do group IV/V synthetics have any real advantage over dinos, besides engine cleanliness? The Timken test comes to mind, where Pennzoil and Valvoline dino showed much smaller wear scars than the most expensive synths. But,it`s been said that those tests have no pertinence to engine applications,so how important is film strength in engine oils?

The only advantage I've seen marketed is group IV/V oils allow for longer oil change intervals and handle extreme temperatures.

I also believe the additive packages can play an important role in making up differences between base stocks (ZDDP, moly, TBN, etc).
