SP1 for Windows 7 will be due in less than a year, with beta versions of SP1 coming out during December. Public versions will be out during January.

If anyone is planning to purchase a W7 computer or planning to upgrade to W7, you might want to wait. I'm still using v.7100 and trying to hold out the urge to upgrade now.

If you keep waiting for the next update you will never be able to upgrade. There is always something new coming out.

Unlike version upgrades, sp upgrades are usually pretty easy. In every other version of Windows, the first service pack has been released in under a year. My current employer's policy used to be not to support our software until the first service pack was released, before MS made it impossible to sell the previous version of software.

I'd buy a Windows 7 pc today, and not worry about it.

I'd buy a PC today, and install Ubuntu on it.

It has nothing to do with "new", it has to do with the perception of when quality is actually attended to. If they stop releasing junk as initial release, no one will feel obligated to wait for SP1. Now instead of quality, they will just rush SP1.

Instead you can just install Ubuntu which people want the day it is released.

Why do you think Windows 7 is junk?

The "people" that download Ubuntu the day it is released are not your average computer users. This is like the Ford vs Chevy or M1 vs Amsoil argument.

I think people are just fed up with Microsoft's nonsense and are looking for something fresh/new and not so "restrictive".

I know I am... I'm tired of doing driver updates, virus scans, spyware scans, service packs, security patches etc.

I also hate how the O/S can have a mind of its own and things that worked stop working and or funny random errors appear here/there for no known reason.

They will win me back when they do away with their stupid licensing bull, offer it at a better price and its new code from scratch versus this slop they keep "freshening" up into a new O/S.

I guess I think that Windows 7 is pretty nice. I like the new features and it is very stable and performs great for me.

I also run Ubuntu and Fedora and use them for embedded development. It is nice that they are free and they work well, but they still have a ways to go in the user interface and ease of use dept.
