Just saw a commercial stating that half of all Nascar teams use Mobil 1. Is this true, do they really use off the shelf oil? I thought they would have some secret race blend.

It is not even close to the stuff you buy off the shelf. But, it is made by Mobil 1 so they technically use M1.

They run a dry sump or wet?

They run a dry sump. All that extra oil floating around in the pan would rob horsepower.

From what I`ve heard,0W20 during qualifying runs, and 0W30 during the actual race. What I`ve always wondered is if the drivers always use the oil in their cars that sponsors them?

Nope. Just like they don't wash their clothes with Tide. Well maybe free detergent, why not use it! tongue2

This is mostly marketing spin. XOM leads you to believe a lot of things without actually telling you any facts.

Remember, there are 3 national touring series, and SEVEN regional series under the NASCAR sanctioning body. How XOM is determining exactly what lubricants are being used in all these cars is beyond me.

I have walked thru the parts rooms of a couple of top NASCAR teams and have NEVER seen Mobil One motor oil. Maybe a quart of M1 gear oil, or bearing grease.

One shop I visited not too long ago had 55 gallon drums of SOPUS oils on hand.

Maybe some of the smaller, less well funded teams are using M1, or whatever product is given to them free. Who knows....doesn't really matter in the end.
