Your going to think I'm nuts but I always liked the engine/exhaust note of the 90-91 vintage cavaliers equipped with the 2.8/3.1L engines.

I like the distinctive sound a 90's something Honda starter makes...
Really? It bothers me for some reason...probably because I hear it outside my window every morning. I like the sound of Ford modular V8s with headers and aftermarket mufflers. Any of the old school American pushrod V8s sound good too. This clip makes me want to put a new cam in my truck... http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Ford-Ranger-30-V6-with_101556.htmDrag cars sound cool, and I get to hear them all the time. I'm five minutes (if that) from Lowe's Motor Speedway and the ZMax drag strip. I'm listening to the NHRA Carolinas Nationals as I type.

Automotive only? Anything running over 6000 RPM. Ferrari V-12s especially but big American V-8s also sound really good going around a track. This video turned up LOUD does it for me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iItzJc-NHI4Flat Track twins are awesome sounding also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6B4k3e0VnUThe video doesn't do justice to how loud and nasty these engines sound in person.

I can distinguish a Honda starter from down the street. So classic. early 2000s to current Mitsubishi fours make a distinct "hollow metallic" sound when they start up. Listen for it next time.

I always liked the 2.8 V6 back in the day, my friend's dad had one in his Pontiac 6000 STE. But something about the exhaust note of an inline-6 appeals to me the most.

The sound of a high revving DOHC V6 or V8, that is soon overcome by the sound of a turbo spooling up.
I loved the sounds my SVT Contour made, and loved them even more when I added the boost.

The quieter the engine, the more I like them. I thought I would like the menacing sounding engine and exhaust in our Z4 but after a some time you get tired of all the ruckus.
So, the Prius up to 20 mph would probably be the engine sound of my choice, i.e. none but the electric hum.

for a non-automotive engine I like the sounds of an Allison T-56 engine and HS prop going through the startup sequence. (C-130E/H engine) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMwbL8DVTYYThe noise in the beginning is the start cart spooling up to 65k rpm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dOp-KLOn8Q&feature=response_watchThere are a lot of small sounds (to a trained ear) in the sequence that I enjoy. Once the engine is running it is boring and puts you to sleep.

J52 turbojet spontaneously bringing itself back to life after ingesting a full-grown seagull a few moments after we went airborne. Tower wasn't kind enough to mention the flock of gulls around midfield when they cleared us to T/O. We spooked several dozen into the air, and were lucky to hit only one of them.
That one went down our left intake (this was in a two engine EA-6B). We heard an incredible "bang", followed by the RPM, EGT, and FF tapes for that engine dropping to near flight idle. You could feel the thrust fading. Then, after what seemed like a long, long time (honest to goodness time compression), the engine wound itself back up to MRT (military rated thrust, fancy term for "full power"). Once we ascertained that we were still flying OK, we declared an emergency, started dumping gas, and turned back into the pattern for a quick PEL, which we executed perfectly.
Oh, did I mention that this happened on my second operational flight in the fleet? Never heard such a sweet sound as that engine coming back to life. . .

An old wooden Chris-Craft (or the likes) with a flat-head or any full inboard marine for that matter as long as it's not an obnoxiously load twin engine job.

Mustang 5.0 GM LSx V-8s Many OHC fours, but minus the [censored] can exhausts IMO. Those did sound nicely throaty in most versions, although some of the Pontiac optional "dual" exhausts bordered on being a bit too tinny sounding.

Joel Agreed. Our 312 Inty (425HP) in our 22' Chris sounded sort of like an Indy Car on steroids when it hit north of 5K. The whole hull resonated with the song of the engine, it was almost a biblical event. It had dual 3" straight pipes with flappers off a Shepherd on it.

My favourite engine sound is the EMD SD70ACe locomotive engines. They are a V16 2 cycle turbocharged engine producing 4300HP at 900 RPM. Love the sound of them when they notch the throttle up and the turbo starts spooling up!

Surprisingly birds usually don't do much damage to the engine, they are considered "soft FOD" Tom: Very true. After we landed, one of the local A-6 squadrons was kind enough to have one of their guys scope the engine for us. Although there was blood splattered and smeared on the last couple feet of the duct, before the compressor face, and a few feathers caught in the inlet guide vanes, the engine itself sustained no detectable damage. I guess it just "digested" the poor guy, and incinerated any small pieces that made it through the compressor section. The other factor contributing to our good fortune was that the J52 is a straight turbojet (not a turbofan, as is so common today). Compared to a TF, the blades are all short and stout, and pretty good at enduring reasonably survivable FOD -- like soft, juicy birds. . .

i might be a bit different than the norm but ones that i have always been fond of since childhood. 1693 Caterpillar. At idle they sound like theirs a midget inside the block trying to break out with a mini sledge. But its a sound that takes me back to childhood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuvjHSWib0I I tried to find a video of a 3408 cat under load really hauling the mail but i couldn't find one that did the sound justice. 12V71 Detroit diesel Doing work has to be an honorable mention. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfyIeO6zQBM

Big Block Hemi or 454
Small Block 340 or 302, nothing like a high revving 340, would love to own another one.

The quieter the engine, the more I like them. I thought I would like the menacing sounding engine and exhaust in our Z4 but after a some time you get tired of all the ruckus.
So, the Prius up to 20 mph would probably be the engine sound of my choice, i.e. none but the electric hum. Blasphemy!
