Just thinking about how it will be near or over 100 degrees here in Texas in a few months. And being kind of new to the site am wondering what yall are running, or will be running in your mowers.

Just curious. But really, what do you have in there and why?

In the old murray that is limited to snow plow duty, Rotella T Synth 5W40 with a Motorcraft FL400S filter. Why? Because I got the RTS for $0.
The new husquvarna gets a 55/45 blend of same RTS 5W40 and Rotella T 10W30. I'd guess this is probably a good blend 10W40. Also runs the FL400S filter... Why? Had left over RTS, but wasnt sure if it was enough, also was not sure if I just wanted to run the 10W30 straight in the summer. It didnt take me long to decide to blend it.
The snowblower gets German Castrol Syntec 0W30. These things have to start cold and deal with mositure, etc. Only the best. Does not even take a whole quart, so why not?

B&S qantum.

Was GC, then M1 0W-40, now Castrol Magnatec SP 5W-40.

Why ?

because water actively boils off the sump when I wash it down after mowing in summer.

GC, because my John Deere mower calls for a 5w30, and GC does everything a 5w30 does and then some. Also, I just "wanted to" use GC. Truth be told, and SAE30 (except non-detergent) oil would be all my mower would ever need.

I change my oil and filters in the spring. I use GC 10w-30 and Wix filters in my John Deere because Tony said it was the best for the mower --- it is 10 years old and so far no problems. I wash it after every use and make sure the under part is as clean as possible. I mow at least an acre once a week during the season. Helen

GC in the mower (GCV160) and edger (B&S), and 15-40 Delo in the pressure washer and generator (Robins).

Edit: I lied, i think I have PP in the edger now just cause it was handy.

Why?? That was the only kind of oil in the garage!!

Anyway, the craftsman lawnmower loves it.
Last year I started it at about 0 degrees F, just to see how the stuff turned over. No, you cannot mow snow, in case you were wondering.

Wow, I didn't expect to see so many fans of synthetics in their mowers.
I was thinking there would be more of a "Supertech 10w30 and leave it till next season, cause why not?" type of attitude. In previous posts it has been said, and it is my experience, that everything falls apart on the mower before the engine goes.

Interesting posts.

My belief is that any decent xw-20 to xw-50 changed once a year for normal residential use will help the engine last long enough that everything will be falling off the mower before you have engine problems.

There's plenty of 10 year old briggs engines out there on the factory fill with top ups.

I use RP 10W-30 MaxCycle in my 6 hp Kawasaki powered JD JX75 and 13 hp V-twin Kawasaki KAI powered SCAG. I figure it's good oil for an air cooled engine.

Shell Rotella T, either straight 30 or 10-30. As the other guys noted, you'll be replacing lots of other parts before the engine goes. \:\!

1/4 quart Mobil Clean 5000 10w40 (SL)
1/4 quart Pennzoil 10w40 (SL)
1/4 quart Castrol GTX 10w40 (SM)

The Mobil and Pennzoil were from the original change and they were old leftovers. The Castrol GTX was for top offs. Oil has ~25 hrs on it and I'm change it come Spring. I'm probably gonna use 30w this time, to help stop the slow oil burning.

BTW, engine is a 1997 Briggs & Stratton.

B&S 5.5HP, 50/50 mix of mobil 1 10w30 and 15w50. Why? Why not. =-)

The mower the above replaced was a 1965 vintage b&s it got whatever was around, usually 10w30 valvoline, it was retired in early 2002ish as it became at mosquito fogger as much as a lawn mower.

I now use 10W-40 synthetic motorcycle oil.

I use it because oil temps can go over 240F in my John Deere riding mower. It has fantastic anti wear, anti foam, antioxidents, anti rust, higher HTHS, and was designed with air cooled engines in mind.

I enjoy playing with my toys so it gets oil changed every 25 hours. Naturally it has two coats of Meguiars gold Class and the rubber floor boards treated with Armor-all. Tires get Armor-all also.

Rotella-T 10W30 HDEO in everything (6 small engines). The HDEO has good dispersant qualities for the engines with no filters and good protection (ZDDP) for the ones that have pressurized systems with filters. I also use it in my 38hp utility tractor and diesel pickup, so it makes for some consolidation. I change annually on the engines without filters, semi-annually on the one with a filter

M1 10W-30, mainly as we can't get a xW-30 HDEO here, xW-30 syns are hard to get, and Honda don't spec an xW-40 for the mower.

I use Rotella SAE 30 or 15w40 in everything at the moment...the oil seems to hold up very well.

Main reason I used it is because I did run it in my truck...it held up OK in the truck. Now that I have converted to 5w40 S9k Schaeffers, they will get that...I like using a single oil for those things I can.

Formula shell mix 2to 1 30wt/40wt. I got it for a quarter a bottle. Mower takes~1/2 qt. to change so I got about 10 yrs. worth, even covering topups. Guessing thats about the expected lifetime of the 80$ mower I use it in.

Amsoil 4 Stroke... Good stuff, flows well, stays clean very long and seems to allow the engines to run through thicker grass/snow...

PP 10w30 in a honda GCV 190 engine.

Its a snapper I bought new 10 years ago. It came with a Tecumseh 6ph with pressure lubrication. But the cam gear sheared one day this spring 2 seconds after startup. So now it has a honda on it.

You will have the Honda for life... Can't kill those engines... We had one on my old go-cart and the engine was over 30 years old and it had like no compression and burnt oil like crazy, but kept going and going... Eventually it wore out and we replaced it with a B&S.

Formula Shell 30w in a year-old Craftsman with a B&S 6.75 "torque-rated" engine.

It had it's third change before storage :) The deck will surely rust away before the engine siezes.

Castrol Syntec 20W-50. I want to run synthetics in this engine due to heat, and anything but the thickest syn oils seem to get consumed quicker than the dino equivalent.

Currently running Rotella 30w in all the lawn equipment, which is all Briggs engines. I have a 3.5 push mower, an older 3.5 tiller, and a 14.5 I/C in the Murray rider. I have a couple gallons of it, should last almost forever.

2 strokes are getting Quaker State 2 cycle oil I got at a rummage sale 2 summers ago.

Shell Rotella T 10W-30. The mower is powered by a 3-cylinder Yanmar diesel and the owner's manual calls for either 5W-30 or 10W-30 meeting API CI-4 or CH-4 or ACEA E3 or E4/E5. I haven't seen any 5W-30 HDEO on this island, which makes sense considering we're as far south as you can get and still be in the USA.

I'm having trouble relating to all the threads on snow-blowers. Ha ha. It's about 70 degrees F. today; but I can see snow up on Mauna Kea down to about the 12,000 foot level.

Think I'll mow the grass. Cheers!

Amsoil ASE in my Honda Masters mower with GXV140.
Amsoil ASE or XD-3 15W40 in my Honda GC160 powered pressure washer.

Both changed annually at the end of the season. Both are stored indoors for the winter (for now - unfinished basements have advantages).

I currently have MC 5000 10w30 in my China Cadet OHV.

I only change annually -- at end of season. I bought the MC on sale. My first change was with Cub Cadet oil bought at the dealer for almost $7/Qt -- only to find out the TSC sold it for $3.99:(.

So many responses in so little time!!!

We must all love our yards!!

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 in the snow blower. I use Mobil 1 5W-30 or 10W-30 in the mower. I use Mobil because that is all I have around. I am also running life tests since I change the spark plugs more than the oil.

Last year I put in a hodge-podge for the fun of it in the 10 year old 17.5HP B&S.

I put it on another thread last summer, not sure now, but it was something like some Maxlife 10-30, some Motorcycle 10-40 & some VSOT...

I did that with the B&S in my Cub Cadet push mower a couple years ago. Then it started to bug me so much I drained it out and stuck Rotella T 10-30 in there. Those things are tough and lightly stressed - it probably wouldn't have made a difference.

Rotella 15W-40. Because if it's good enough for a tractor-trailer, it's good enough for my Briggs & Stratton.

When I don't have that it's Valvoline Max Life 5W-30 or 10W-30. Because it works and I have it on hand all the time for the wife's car, LOL...

Mobil 1 10w40 High Mileage, its SL rated, in two units.

Toro Super Recycler with Briggs engine.
And a 30-40 year old 4 stroke edger.

The edger leaks its oil. I ran it last season with a bit of MMO in the sump to clean it out. The HM additives should help a bit.

The Toro sees long weekends of 100+ degree temps, so I figure the 40 weight should help a bit.
BTW, I let the Toro run for 15 minutes before I drained the oil. This is the 5th or 6th drain and fill it has had.
The oil came out silver.
I typically let the mower sit a few minutes after I mow before I change fluids. This time I tried to do it while the mower was hot.
Seems that I still have a bunch of break in particles in there.

Delo400 30wt and for older engines a mix of Delo400 30wt & Delo400 40wt. Average starting temp 70F, no cold starts here. Commercial usage, engines are pushed to the max in thousands of hours of usage followed by manual recommended. No Delo400 10w-30, a personal thing.

Started out with M1 10W30 as I thought it was one of the best. Ran Amsoil ASE for a while because I liked the notion of a VII-free formulation. Now running Rotella T - leftover, cheap, works well.

Still working on a stash of Mobil 2T for the lawnboys.

Genset & pressure washer get Rotella 30w single grade under the theory that once started they run for hours. If I had a 4 stroke mower I'd be using 10-30 as run time is about 30 min each week on each mower.

I'm still on the toro 30 wt OEM fill on my new toro recylcer 20333. but I bought briggs 30 wt oil for oil change for my briggs engine. I have a 6 yr warranty on my mower. I figure I need to stick with 30 wt lawn mower oil to avoid problems if a warranty problem comes up.

Stands up to high sheer and high temperature, engines seem to run stronger with it, too.

My mower is still running on the Syntec 0W30 that I put in it 2 seasons ago. I may get around to changing it this season. Whenever I finally change the oil in it, I'm using whatever left over oil I have in the garage.

If I had a riding lawn mower I would use a HDEO oil in it.

My Craftsman mower has synthetic 5w-30. I think it's Valvoline.

The very outdated owners manual said to use straight 30 weight. But I found the original Briggs manual on their website. It also said I could use synthetic 5w-30.

pennzoil hd 30 in my briggs powerd yard machine. It seems to like the straight 30wt pennzoil more than it did a multi-viscosity 5-30 i put in there last year. I put some old quaker 4x4 last year and it smoked and smoked and smoked. burned up quite a bit of oil too. (temps were from about 60-100 during grass cutting season) sucked out the old stuf and changed over to hd30 and it works like a champ now. Thinking about trying rotella 30 when i run out but idk if its worth it

Thanks

yes it is. Shell Rotella 15/40 carries the MC oil rating, but people still put it in the cars / lawnmowers....
i don't know that automotive oil would be "better" or not. i have ran it in 2 different mowers and niether have blown up yet.

Automotive oil is better than MC oil. Automotive oil has less friction than MC oil. I run M1 EP 10-30 up here in Big D.

M1 10w-30 in a Kohler 22HP and a GCV160 Honda. I run it because it meets GM4718M so it has good high temp stability. Good stuff, Wally World has good 5qt prices. No other reason.
