I was at WM, here in Canada, yesterday and noticed ST in 0w30. Talked to the tire lube guys who report that it's made by Shell. The back of the bottle says 'made in canada'. Anyone have experience with this oil? Any specs available? I doubt it's the same as ST at WM in the USA. And it's $23.99 to boot. Not bad for a readily available 0w30.

Spoke with WM cs, they said all their ST oil is made by safety kleen. They gave me the number, which I called. They are going to have a tech call me back for detailed specs. Looking forward to it :)

Not to change the subject, but do they make a ST 0w-20?

Oh, I guess I did change the subject....

That doesn't sound right. According to their MSDS site http://msds.walmartstores.com/ Super Tech is primarily Specialty Oil Co. and Warren Distribution. I don't see 0W-30 listed at that site - maybe it's a Canada thing only?

Interesting side note - type in "oil" alone at that site, and look what all comes up...

They changed the name from Tech 2000 to Supertech this year. I have two jugs of ST 0W-30 in the basement and I've used the Tech 2000 0W-30 for the last five winters. It seems to be good oil. Here's a UOA on the 5W-30 synthetic:

The 10W-30 synthetic:

The 10W-30 conventional:

Our 5W-30 ST Synth is Warren Dist. or Spec. Oil. depending on whether you buy the 5qt or 1qt. Warren only makes the larger container, SO the smaller. Strange.

Yeah, same SuperTech name, but different oil by different manufacturer then the USA.

Nope, no 0w20. Only 5w20 conventional in the 20 weight.

Nice to see good UOA's on the safety kleen products, and recycled oil to boot. That hits my environment hippie side nicely.

Do you have any specs on the 0w30?

The PP (5/10w30) at $19.88 is a good deal so I stocked up on that. But it is sure nice to know there's a cheap alternative that performs very well.

FWIW.....

If you compare the factory stampings on the bottle and even the shelf codes at WM, it appears to me that the MFG is not saftey kleen for all of Supertech products.

My reasoning is that the product codes for garden variety safety kleen oils (re-refined oils) have an SK at the front, just like the SOPUS products (PZ, Shell etc) have a different code at the front. I have noticed that the Supertech synthetic offerings don't have an SK at the front of the product code in the shelf labels and the computer batch codes on the bottles are also different.

Further, I do not know whether saftey kleen makes (or even has the capacity to make) a synthetic product or whether it buys it in bulk from SOPUS, Petro Canada or Esso and packages it for WM. Products from each of these Manufacturers is available in WM.

In any case, these are clues that have led me to believe that the 0w-30 is not actually a safety kleen product but is a re-bottled Petro Canada or Esso product. The bottle/batch codes do not look to me to have similar coding to SOPUS products.

Very interesting. Makes sense since there is no mention of 0w30 on safety kleen's site.

I would love to have a virgin uoa report on this stuff. And if it is indeed Esso or PC, then you can bet it's a great product.

It's safety kleen! it goes under the name "Performance Plus" and "America's Choice Synthetic" on Safety Kleen's site. It's excellent oil, with a good dose of moly. There was/is a UOA of this stuff on a 4 cylinder ranger and the UOA was outstanding. Wal-Mart Canada's oil's have been rebranded from Tech2000 to SuperTech just like the USA has been for a while, but the oils are from completely different sources. All ST oils in Canada are made in Canada by S-K. While Tech2000/ST (Canada) synthetic has been a favourite of mine, did you also see PP was on sale for $19.95/4.4L. I got a jug of PP instead yesterday, which I strongly suspect is the near exact same formula as Motomaster Formula 1 synthetic oil because they smell exactly the same and theyre both made by Shell.

PP on sale, and for 19.88.. oh did I ever. For canada that's a wicked bargain. 10 jugs now.. couldn't stop myself from going back and emptying their shelves. At 10k km (6k miles) oci's I have enough for almost 4 years. I have a serious oil problem

Hopefully this stash will calm it a little for now

oh, and I'm not sure if the 0w30 is by sk, as the previous poster mentioned. We know the other weights are. There is no info on that viscosity on the sk website. I'll call sk again tomorrow to confirm and post back.

Yup, all three former S2K, now ST synths are from the same place... they've rung identical on the 'olfactory' sensors since the SL formula! Like I say, S-K website also shows specifically those three synth grades under 'Performance Plus ZRS Synthetic' and 'America's Choice Synthetic'

The 5w30 and 10w30 are also listed on the API site, but on different pages

Maybe not right now though, with the Mobil 1 shortages... It was completely sold out here.
