The data is from my '99 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC using Amsoil Bypass filtration and Amsoil Series 2000 0W30. The mileage on this oil sample is 30,265 miles. No oil filters were changed and no make up oil added at this sampling. The UOA on all the samples was performed by Blackstone Labs. The first ( of 7 ) column represents the virgin oil ( VOA ), the second is a previous sample of this oil at 5120 miles, the third is another previous sample at 7679 miles, the fourth is a sample at 19,848 miles, the fifth is a sample at 25k miles, the sixth is the current sample ( 30625 miles ) and the last represents Blackstone’s average of data collected for this type motor.

Blackstone's comments: AL: No problems were found in the latest sample from your Explorer. Iron increased to the highest level that we've seen in recent history but is likely due to the long oil run. Wear generally increased in this sample but nothing was high enough to warrant any serious concern. The viscosity of the sample was just slightly high but shouldn't be a problem and no harmful contaminants were found. The TBN read 2.1 so you had little active additive remaining. 1.0 is considered too low for extended use. For an oil run this long wear looks great!

How much make up oil was added total for the whole run of 30K Miles?

This isn't the only good S2k UOA in a Ford engine with a bypass set up. It's a great match. Excellent report.

Awesome! I am also curious about the total makeup oil added so far, I would think you have removed about 28 ounces for oil samples (4 oz per analysis), so if you have burned 0 ounces, I would think you have added maybe 3/4 of a quart so far to keep it topped up. Is that approximately correct?
Over the last 10.5k you have only had 2 ppm AL and 11 ppm FE wear, very nice. Also the flashpoint looks good so no fuel dilution. My only concern would be the rising solids and the very slight viscosity increase. I suppose you could keep going, are you shooting for 35k? How long has the oil been in use? Have you changed any filters over the 30.3k?
Dennis

Did you take the sample with a pump through the dipstick or from the oil pan?
If from the oil pan, blackstone recommends letting some drain first then grab a sample so you wont get any [censored] with the oil when you sample. If you let some drain first then get a sample for 5 samples that is a lot of make up oil added through out this run.

Dennis I’m just speculating here but if you took the samples with the oil hot buy draining it from the oil pan, I’m curious how you drained a min amount of oil out to sample, unless you used the suction method. I know I wasn’t gonna change my oil when I sent it in for a UOA but when that hot oil came out of the oil pan and burnt the %#&^ outta me, I decided to change it (non voluntarily), lol.

I use s Fumoto oil drain valve. Makes sampling very simple.

Its nice to see Amsoil's claim of 35k to be true with the right application. Also shows that Ford can make some nice wearing engines. The TSO seems to drop tbn very quickly is and then stay steady, I'm sure some makeup oil could of helped it along the way. Did you use a ea oil filter?

Any makeup oil added over 30k? Oil filter or bypass filter changed? In addition to these questions, I'd like to know how many quarts the entire system & bypass setup holds, & how long it's taken you to reach this distance.

My question would be how would this UOA been *if* he did not use a By-Pass filter? Amsoil does not advertise their 25k oils that you can only go the distance (which BTW, I am impressed that you are one of the VERY few to go some real miles ) with this type of a filter system. Just like when folks get a UOA with this or that oil but put in an additive, we can not really state that the oil (or additive) made the UOA better/worst unless we do it both ways. Impressive UOA and mileage. Would LOVE to see it without the By-Pass filter to see if the filter changed anything or if the oil could stand alone? (which I think it can WITH more than one NORMAL filter change) Or with some other brand of oil and the By-Pass filter to see how the oil holds up? (maybe a 20k Mobil 1 EP run? Bet that would NOT put up as good of numbers as this 30k run of Amsoil) Not trying to rain on any parade, but just wondering how much of this UOA was oil and how much was filter? Take care, Bill
