Cars been running great expect for a pre-ignition ping problem which still is not fixed. Mileage has been outstanding as usual with pennzoil yellow bottle. Currently I have PP in the engine along with a new fram air filter, between the 2 my mileage has been off a tad or a bit more then a tad. Oil filter was an EAO20 on its second oil change. For now I'm stuck at 5k which is short even for warranty requirements. Oils where Pennzoil yellow bottle, then amsiol XL, then Havoline pre-DS.

Any comments on this analysis would be greatly appreciated, the lab had something to say about 1 particular area but I am interested in what others think before I say what it is.

Again, another great showing for the Yellow Bottle.

Just changed the air filter with this oil change. All of my analysis where on 2nd runs of the oils. No one has noticed the TBN's interesting. The Yellow bottle came back critical from OAI as TBN being to low at below 2. Any thoughts on why my TBN is coming out low? I don't short trip, I drive this car 50 miles one way 5 days a week. My van and other vehicles also come back with low tbn so maybe its enviromental.

5k oci with dino in this engine is fine with your UOA results. When your preignition ping issue is resolved, your uoa may even look better. I would be tempted to run syn to keep the TBN up but like you said, it's a 5k oci warranty thing and changing syn at 5k miles is a waste. btw, I like the new style of the kio rio sedan

You should call them up and ask them whay a tbn of >2 with dino oil run 5175miles is low?? I think what they meant is that the oil has run its life and to change it now. A tbn of 2 with 5k miles on dino is perfectly fine i would think.

This is OAI's comments:
"TOTAL BASE NUMBER (TBN) IS LOW. RECOMMEND CHANGE LUBE OIL AND LUBE OIL FILTER, IF NOT ALREADY DONE. ***RESULTS REPORTED BY FAX*** "

Critical is how they flag it, its also in red on the report. The havoline with a TBN of 2.12 was flagged abnormal in yellow. I know OAI changed how they test for TBN so the numbers are lower but even the 2nd run of XL 5W-20 was only 3.33 at 5k.

I'm more interested in if anyone see's any reason they come out low all the time? I'm thinking it maybe the operating enviroment but I'm not curtain.

just change your oil between 4-5k miles with dino and not to worry about it.. seems like your motor maybe be a lil tough on oil but not too bad.. just dont go over 5k miles if you can
