This run was over the course of ten weeks, averaging 116 km per day. Lots of 100+ mile journeys, hardly any weather below 60 degrees, no stop-and-go driving, the conditions are about as close to ideal as they come. This includes a 18 hour period of basically continuous highway runtime making up 1/4 of the mileage on the OCI as well.

These conditions are basically the complete opposite to those which the car faced when making the Mobil 1 juggernaut run of unaided cold starts and exclusively city driving in a Canadian winter.

I presently have Pennzoil 5W-30 in the car again and intend to run it until October or 8,000 km as my travels have decreased, and then replace it with XD-3 0W-30 and go to six month intervals.

About 5k miles. Not bad at all. Lead and tin are a bit higher than I usually expect, but the lead, at least, looks typical for the engine. The insolubles went up a bit, what filters did you use for these intervals? Were they new both times?

Obviously wear is down, mostly, and it's impossible to really know why since both the conditions and the oil changed completely.

What do you think the silicon is from?

Nice flashpoint for a conventional 30wt by the way!

The silicon is from gasket sealant used in a head gasket repair, I believe it keeps dropping and doesn't show increased wear because of it.

As well, I changed air filters at the beginning of this OCI so there may have been some getting through before the filter packs up.

In both cases, the filters used were Wix 51040 oil filters. The current filter on it is my last old style PureONE and then back to Wix filters. I stocked up on three oil changes worth of XD-3 0W-30, and three filters, so I will be good until October 2009.

Another interesting example of Blackstone's choice wording (the TBN stuff). It looks like your wear is coming under control with the different operating conditions. Insolubles are ticking up a bit.

Very good run, much better than the M1...couple of things stand out for me:

I'm suprised that with almost all highway driving, TBN dropped so low in 5k miles...usually, SM dino's in all highway conditions can go 6-7k miles w/o much of a problem. Also, with the OP having used a good quality syn and a short run before the YB, there shouldn't be any 'clean up needed'. Still, oil made it to 5k miles like most on here recommend, so it did what it was supposed to...

I'm also suprised by the lack of moly in YB! This oil used to be loaded with it - yet Johnny claims 'no formulation change'....not a huge deal, but interesting....

XD-3 sounds like a good choice for a winter oil....are you gonna UOA your current run of YB in October before installing the XD-3...?

Has Pennzoil ditched molybdenum in the additive package?

Paging Johnny - Johnny on line one!

:edit: I just searched and the last 2 Pennz YB results show no moly! OH NO, Pennzoil sucks now!!!

I assume you won't do a winter stop-and-go run of the Pennzoil to get some numbers that can be compared to the M1?
