Blackstone comments: Your 4Runner is looking good. Universal averages show typical wear levels for a Toyota 4.0L after about 5,000 miles on the oil. Your oil run lasted 5,465 miles, wear was around averages, which is a good indication there are normally wearing parts inside. The TBN read 2.2, showing some active additive left. The oil was in good shape physically, containing no moisture,fuel, or signs of coolant. try going up to 7,000 miles next time. Nice report!

Any comments??

Very, very nice run - could probably do 7-7.5K on this combo.

I'm impressed with how well it stayed in grade.

So I must say im new here just how do I tell it stayed in grade addguy?

Each oil weight is a 'range' of cst at 100C.

20 weight - 5.6 - 9.3 cst;
30 weight - 9.4 - 12.4 cst;
40 weight - 12.5 - 16.8 cst;
50 weight - 16.9 - ...not 100% sure, but the main ones are there.

Yours, at 9.75 cst, still in the 'range' of a 30-weight. It would have started at about 10.3 - 10.5 cst, so it sheared a bit, but not much.

Am I the only one who think the TBN is low enough to at least remark about? It's certainly not too low, but with "only" 5,400 miles on a good synthetic oil, I guess I expected the TBN to remain a little higher.

It did stay in grade very well.

You take into account starting TBN, miles driven, conditions driven in and remaining TBN.

It's safe to say he could go a few more k on the oil. Formula Shell also isn't as robust as its sister oil PP but I think its safe to say it would only be a mild difference in results. With a UOA like this, he isn't doing any harm or wrong using FS. Good stuff!

"Am I the only one who think the TBN is low enough to at least remark about?"

No, I'd agree. That's not too low or anything, but at only 5400 miles.... well... there's lots of people who recommend "any syn" for 7500~10,000 miles in "any app" where here, this oil is probably completely shot by 7500 miles.

I like FS, but obviously there is a limitation here on how long an OCI is reasonable on it.

Holy low Iron, though. Virtually no wear.

we use the 5w-30 for both our YARISes with DENSO oil filter . Use leftover oil for push lawnmowers . Change out little less than 5,000 miles . Get it when on sale for $3.50 a quart . Thanks for U.O.A..

Since this oil is most likely the SM, GF-4, I'm sure that this Formula Shell Full Synthetic in SN, GF-5 will produce some great results also.

For the sale price at Bee Jays, $3 a quart, IMO this is some great oil at a great price.

I've only run the FS in Dino but I'll be using some of this FS during the upcoming winter season.
