My aunt bought a 2013 VW Beetle TDI about a month ago, has about 1300 miles on it. VW recommends 10k OCI. VW will give her 3 years/36,000 miles of free oil changes and it will always get serviced there, they have always treated her well and are (surprisingly) honest, don't try to sell her things she doesn't need.

She has a 2004 VW Beetle TDI she bought brand new, has 152k miles and dealer always serviced as well at 10-11k OCI, always synthetic.

What OCI do you recommend for the 2004 and 2013 once VW stops giving her free oil changes for the 2013?

They are not short tripped, driven 30 miles one way to work 90% freeway with about 1/3 traffic. Each will get weekend trips occasionally as well and are driven moderately/ to a little hard but not abused. They are also both automatics.

Thanks.

I have a 2013 Jetta TDI with the same engine. 10k should be just fine throughout the life of the car. UOA would help support this, but most folks over on tdi club are running 10k without issue.

For what it's worth, I would go for an oil choice outside of the Castrol the dealer will use. PZ Euro L would be my first choice, though Mobil ESP seems to perform well also.

10k on the 2013, ESP seems like a good choice.

15-20k on the 2004 with Rotella T6 or M1TDT or any other good syth diesel oil. Have the camshaft inspected if it has not been yet. And make sure you're doing ATF changes every 50k.

The UOA section confirms that the 2008-up engines can take a 10,000 mile OCI.

Just remember you can't use the oil for the 2004 Beetle (VW502/505/505.01) in the 2013 Beetle. The VW 504/507 used in the 2013 Beetle has a different additive pack that protects the DPF, and it is a lower viscosity than 502/505/505.01 oil.

I don't know if you could use 504/507 oil in an older TDI engine. I wouldn't take that risk. Although Shell RTS has no 502/505/505.01 approvals, UOA confirms that it is as good or better than VW approved oils.

It is unfortunate that you can't use 1 type of oil in 2 cars. That makes things easier.

I would be sticking firmly to 10k on both of them.

New Beetle looks much sleeker. Always a fan of red cars if the shape of the cars suits it. Which the curves of the Beetle certainly do.

In the UK i would running them both on Mobil 1 ESP 5w30.

A quick double check of the UK website shows that the 2012 2.p diesel dsg and the 2004 1.9pd auto are both speccdd for that oil.

I assume the 5w30 ESP in the US is the same as the EU one?

Quick cut n paste from Mobil UK website.

I personally think the older 1.9 engine is likely to outlast the newer 2.0.

Been a few issues on the 2.0, oil pumps still seem to be an issue despite the modifications.

Though the older 1.9 in tdi or pd guise where one of the most reliable diesel engines on the msrket for many years.

I put 150k on one back in'99-00 in just under 18 months when i was a courier. And i sometimes ran it past 12k on the oil.

Do you mean fuel pumps being an issue in the 2.0 common rail cars? I haven't heard of oil pumps giving people trouble on these. The hpfp certainly has a risk.

Keep in mind with the Pumpe Duse motors, there can be a tendency to wipe the cam with some 5w30s and most people have moved to 5w40s on those.

Therefore my recommendations would be 10k intervals on both.

Castrol SLX Gold LL VW 507 5w30 in the new car.
Mobil 5w40 TDT in the 2004.
