Post your rpms at 70mph - 07/13/14 08:07 PM

I am always interested in the rpms that an engine turns at typical highway cruising speed (70mph). I'm curious to see what others report...

My '09 Crown Victoria with the 3.27 rear axle ratio turns 2050 at 70mph.

Off topic I know, but you should try MC synthetic blend 5w-20 in the CV. We use that exclusively in our squads and change every 4K. That 4k could be 6-7k if the cars weren't idled as much and weren't doing near redline runs every day for calls.

This reminds me - read an article in CarMag many years ago - great magazine, Canadian, didn't last long. Anyway, they did a road test of a Lada Niva (the little Russian 4x4) and really liked it, but did say that the 4500 RPM in top gear at 80 kph was a bit much.

In the CVLX its about 1800RPM with 2.73s and larger 255/45R18 tires.
Its going to get 4.10s here in a month or so. It would bring it up to about 2600RPM.

The CVPI also has 3.27s as your '09 so it is the same 2000RPM.

Probably saves us a few speeding tickets? I put 205/70R15 instead of 205/75R15's on the Tracker and didn't tell my wife of the slight speed difference, I figure its just a little safer to go a little slower.

Tracker at 60 mph(speedometer) is 2800 rpm, Focus is 2500rpm.

Most countries legislatures allow speedos to read high but not low, to prevent you from going faster than you think. This way you can't sue the manufacturer if you get a speeding ticket or get into an accident because you were traveling too fast.

If the OP would have asked for rpm @ a mile a minute speed of 60 this would have been a more interesting topic. I just changed the fun gear in the quick change rear end in my Camaro, which takes less than 15 minutes, from a 4.47 to a 3.69. Harder to get rolling, but much better after you get rolling. 2800rpm @ 60. I like 6th gear in my C5 Corvette. 1350 rpm @ 60.
Posted by: RobertISaar

Re: Post your rpms at 70mph - 07/14/14 06:30 PM

60/70=.857

multiply RPM at 70 by .857 and you have RPM at 60, unless you for some reason drop a gear or have slippage going on at 60 that doesn't happen at 70.

My Bronco is geared too tall IMO and is only turning about 1900 rpm at 70. I think I might get rid of the stock 3.55 gears and put in some 4.10s. That would put me at about 2200 rpm at 70, which would put me back in the powerband. It's gutless in OD and downshifts too much on the highway.

That is similar to my Silverado 5.3L with 6 spd auto and 3.42 rear. I like to stay in 5th most of the time and pickup seems to get the best balance of mpg and performance right in the 1900-2100 RPM range. I hardly ever get to the freeways so the pickup really stays at 65 or less most of the time.

IIRC, 2100-2300 RPM. I can't remember exactly, but it's somewhere around there. I don't do much sustained 70 MPH driving, unfortunately.

About 2500 in the Silverado with 4.56 gears. Horrible fuel mileage.

3300 - 3400 in the Fit. Used to be annoyingly loud at those RPMs but seemed quieter now that I'm using PU. Could just be placebo effect. Really wish it had a 6th gear.

2500 in the Taurus

About 2400 in the Dakota, which has 3.90 gears.
About 7100 on the Burgman.
Not sure on the Caddy, which has no tach.

F150 @ 1950 rpm. That has a 3.73 rear end, so it's only getting about 18-19 mpg unloaded. (not to mention it's a crew cab)

Saab @ 2400 rpm. That will reliably get 32-33 mpg at that speed.

C3 tops out at 39 mph…and the Kawasaki at 62!

In my subie with slightly larger than stock wheels, I believe it's between 3100 and 3200 at 70 in 5th gear, maybe closer to 3100.

In normal weather and wind's, level cruise, manifold is usually around 2/3rds of an atmosphere, meaning it's got around 50% more power without downshifting if I were to go floor it.

Actually, a lot of C7 owners are getting over 40 MPG highway under perfect conditions!!! My best in my C6 is 37.0 MPG, so I totally believe I could get well over 40 with a C7 since it has the extra gear (7 vs my 6) plus the ability to run on only 4 cylinders too.

Can you average that over an entire tank? It seems pretty reasonable that a Corvette should get decent fuel economy... it surely doesn't take that much horsepower to push an aerodynamically slippery car with a relatively low weight at 70 mph. But it still doesn't seem likely that you could get 37+ at that speed over 350 to 400 miles in a repeatable way. 29-32 I'd absolutely believe though.

Re: Post your rpms at 70mph - 08/21/14 05:47 AM

I've never paid attention to what the RPMs are at 70 MPH, but I know off the top of my head for 75 MPH it's:

Mitsu: 3,100 rpm (4.56 rear axle ratio)
Grand Marquis: ~1,900 rpm (3.08 rear axle ratio)
Envoy: 2,200 rpm (3.73 rear axle ratio)

Not going to be much of a difference for 5 MPH.

About 2900 RPM in a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX 5-sp. 3.9 final drive ratio. Hovers right around where the turbo kicks in.

My 1995 Integra GS-R was more about 3350 RPM. Some felt that it could use a 6th gear.
