Hopefully someone can answer this. I had a 2012 Jeep and a 2012 Dodge journey, both with the 3.6l engine and the recommended oil was 5W-30. I now have a 2013 Doddge Durango, same engine, and the recommended oil is now 5W-20. When I was at my dealer recently, I took a look at the 2014 Durang manual and it read, 5W-20 is the recommended oil, but you may use 5W-30 if 5W-20 is not available.
So, my question is: can I use 5W-30 in my 2013 Durango, and why is Chrysler switching back and forth on this issue?
Any help is appreciated.

I'd love to know the real factual answer myself, not opinions. I have a feeling you'll never really know for sure. It's good to see in 2014, they recognize 5W20 and 5W30 as being OK. In prior years it was one size fits all.

As far as your question goes, if you want to comply with your 2013's warranty use 5W20, and 5W30 for your 2012.

Your owner's manual for the 2013 Durango states 5w-20 recommended, not mandatory. And further states:

"NOTE: SAE 5W-30 engine oil approved to Fiat 9.55535-S1
or Fiat 9.55535-S3 may be used when SAE 5W-20 engine
oil meeting MS- 6395 is not available."

So sounds like the same thing as 2014. Most owners manuals for most standard cars state the range and types etc recommended and other options.

To go backwards, would there be any harm in running 5w20 in my out of warranty 2012?

No harm whatsoever. Either oil range covers pretty much every gas, automotive condition we can muster. There were no major changes made to the Pentastar between 2012-2014 aside from different oil filters as mentioned above.
