I have a B&S 22 hp v-twin on my tractor. It has a spin on oil filter. Well, I just paid $13 for this tiny thing yesterday!

Does anyone use something else? Maybe a small car filter that I could get for like $3?

You provided little information to go on but look at this one. I used 22hp B&S to dig this up.

My info shows shows its much less.

I have a 25-horse B&S 2-banger on a Craftsman rider. I use a Wix 51516, a big automotive filter. It is also available as a Napa Gold 1516. I buy them on-line from Filter 1 for maybe 4 bucks each.

I've got an 18.5 HP vee twin. I've been using a Motorcraft FL400S; Usually available at Wally World for $3.XX. It DOES hang out a bit, but it's got a lot more filter element, and it't cheap and available 24/7. My oil stays really clean with it.

I have a brand new yard tractor with a 24-hp B&S Intek V-Twin, calls for the same oil filter yours does. But it will *easily* take a longer filter- in fact, Briggs even specifies a longer filter for their Extended Life series.

My Dodge Neon oil filters have the correct thread, gasket, diameter, & even closely match the bypass valve settings, they just happen to be about an inch taller.

You see where I'm goin' with this, right?

The following filters are recommended for my Neon, & will be the only oil filters my new machine ever sees, once I remove the factory-installed filter. $11-$13 for a lawn mower oil filter? No way! And you need never do it again.

Some part numbers to get you started- remember, these are only about 3/4" to 1" longer than the factory filter. Gives you that much more filter media, & you might find some of 'em on sale cheap!

Wix 51348
NAPA Gold 1348(mfg by Wix)
Evil Fram PH-3614

AC/Delco PF-53(Champion)
Purolator Prem Plus L-10241
Advance Auto Parts AA-3614(mfg by Purolator)
Havoline T-29(Purolator)

And if you want something that's *Really* taller, the MotorCraft named above will work well too!

Good luck, & let us know what you decide on.

I have the same 22 horse Briggs as you do. I used the Advance Auto crossover of the Motorcraft 400S. Sticks way out there but it fits fine and is $2 and change when on sale.

Not really adding anything, just trying to make it easier to read:

I love finding $2-3 replacements for $10+ factory filters ... and the cheaper ones I find (Purolator, Wix, etc ...) are of higher quality and capacity than the factory-branded unit.

It really irks me that B&S, Tecumseh, John Deere, etc ... will package up a filter they bought for $0.50 and then package it with a MSRP of $10-12.

I used to own a 2004 HD motorcyle that could use a B&S oil filter (#491056). For some reason, I bought a STP s3614 for my B&S 21 horse motor after cross referencing at Auto Zone.

On the same oil filter list for the bike (from a bike forum), I found the STP s3614 oil filter. Literally, a small world for B&S motor oil filters.

Not exactly-
For the Wix filters you lidsted have several different lengths and several different MICRON RATINGS.
Just because it screws on doesn't mean it's the right filter!

Go to the Wix site and plug in the 51348 and then look at what it fits! Turns out you were using a YUGO filter amongst the other various brands it fits.

Apologies for the misleading information on the Wix filter. I received this information second hand. I certainly would check the filter choice, before using.

I did not use the Wix myself. The information was posted, just as a suggestion, on how some applications do serve a dual purpose without problems.

Depending on clearance you may be able to get a Motorcraft FL1A on there! This is a seriously large filter but only costs $3.25 at Wal*Mart.

If you're going to use a filter with an incorrect gasket, why not use the FL-299 and go bigger yet.
Maybe you won't cause any engine damage from oil starvation while the filter fills up.

Supertech ST-3600 (FL400S clone) is longer, fits, and appears to work just fine on my Kohler Courage 20HP. Does this mean that it will work on the Briggs as well?

I did however pre fill the filter because of its size. My owners manual says to prefill the normal filter anyhow.

Factory filter = almost $9.00..... wallyworld Supertech ST-3600 = $2.47 and the appearance at least of more filter media.

Definately more external surface area with the 3600 and it is painted black, both of which will provide more cooling for the oil. This filter increases the oil total capacity to aprx. 2 quarts on my engine.

Slightly off topic: Those Kohler folks are pretty smart in at least one respect IMHO... There is some engine cooling air directed at the oil filter. Not an accident,I am certain.

Rickey.

Ricky, that filter will fit most small engines given enough room. Same base, gasket, threads, etc, but about twice as long. I use the Carquest/Napa equiv of the 3600 on my Kohler Command 20.

Yep! They have the same dimensions & ratings. As long as you have the room. Also Kohler Command. Tecumseh's are a mixed bag, using a couple different filter base sizes.

" Those Kohler folks are pretty smart in at least one respect IMHO... There is some engine cooling air directed at the oil filter. Not an accident,I am certain."
If they couldn't figure out their head gasket issues, I don't think cooling air on the filter was intentional. Sometimes beneficial things happen in spite of the engineers!

"Ricky, that filter will fit most small engines given enough room."
"Most" because there are more Kohlers and Briggs out there. Kaws & Hondas take different filters.
