I took my 1991 Dak to the local mechanic and asked him to lube the steering. He said rack-and-pinion requires no lubrication. When I said the dealer charged me for it once he said they probably meant the ball joints.

My question is, does anyone know if that is right? I remember when the dealer did claim to have lubed the steering, the steering felt smoother, so they must have done something.

I could take back to the dealer but I can't stand them.

Have a look at some of the DODGE truck boards; dodgetrucks.org; search under "fasstdak" (a MOPAR dealer tech and racer); has probably answered your question at least once.

the outer tie rods are servicable on some of the dakotas, as well as the ball joints. inners are not servicable as rack and pinions are sealed. the inner tie rods as well as the upper ball joints are common failure items on these trucks. i would say i do one about every 2 or 3 months.

I didn't see the answer on dodgetrucks.org but I wasn't aware of this forum (I had used dodgedakotas.org, etc.) Thanks for the tip.

John
