The Volkswagen Wasserboxer

It was A type 4 VW Engine with water cooling bolted on, with a weird "rubber lip" headgasket.

I hade a 1.9l specimen in the Van pictured here:

And, as a bonus of sorts, it was controlled by the Awful-Awful-Awful VW "Digijet" Fuel Injection system. It would not run right, ever, it had this condition where the idle would go up and down constantly. The engine would bog down and refuse to push the van anywhere unless I ran with the O2 sensor unplugged. Google "Vanagon syndrome".

The later vans had "Digifant" which was moderately less awful, and was supposedly a system used by other late 80s VWs, so at least parts can be found for that.

Forgive my many links, but you can read about the 5 (!) rear engined volkswagens my family had here, on my forum.

Page has lotsa cursin' in it though, so don't click if easily offended, or at work. The reason for this, as you'll see, is that the VWs were not fun to own.

Mazda Millenia S with the Miller-cycle variant. Never owned one, but have had 4 other Madzas and keep in touch with other Mazda owners and Mazda mechanics. Not quite a supercharger, not quite a turbo, but a different type of 'boost' the Mazda engineers bolted on their V-6's on this premium car. Total piece of ke-rap, even from the salesteam who were paid to sell them.

Anything with a timing belt. Integral valvetrain parts should not be wear out items. Of course if the rest of the engine is a throw away affair at 100k miles then maybe it would be ok. Anything modern that requires periodic valve lash adjustments, exception noted for ultra high performance engines.
 
well... that all depends on your idea of longevity... My OM617 3L diesel in my MB has a chain, and its 'stretch' has been quite low, but that doesnt mean that I dont plan to at least plan to replace the guides, and perhaps even the chain at 250 or 300k miles...

LEMME see: someone doesn't want to do valve lash on a modern engine(IMHO a manually adjustable valvetrain is Godsend to me), doesn't wanna deal with timing belt replacement (also serves as a friendly reminder to replace waterpump and/or belt tensioner bearing/assembly), and what else....??!~

I think that person is just wishing for miracles coming from a mechanical device that is known to have wear-n-tear over time. wait a minute! Didn't a timing chain driven engine also have some form of timing issues as they age? (e.g. sprocket teeth wear, chain stretch, chain tensioner rail would either break(nylon) or loose tension...etc.)

True, but I think they corrected that problem beginning with the '03 model year.
