I was doing some googling and found the following quote that I thought many would find interesting. I'm not sure whether his conclusions necessary follow, but here it is FWIW:

"Some trivia. Do a search in Google for Mobil 3309. This is Mobil`s 3309 ATF. It is Toyota Type T-IV equivalent. 3309 is a GM spec. So yes, Mobil 3309 is Toyota Type T-IV which might as well be Dexron-VI. So Mobil 3309 ATF can be used on any vehicle requiring past versions of Dexron ATFs because Dexrons are backward compatible. A link below to Mobil`s 3309 page is below. 3309 is required in a lot of Aisin-Borg-Warner ATs. Looking at things any AT needing LT71141 can use 3309.

Here's an except from the M1 site referenced above:

I don't know how to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the writer above, but I'd be interested in peoples' comments here.

Could this M1 3309 ATF be a good choice for both my Chev truck that calls for Dex III my BMW 5speed that asks for Esso LT71141?

:wipeshead:

Mobil 3309 ATF is used in Aisin Warner transmissions requiring a T-IV (JWS3309) equivalent fluid. JWS3309 and T-IV are identical.

Dexron-VI and JWS3309/T-IV are not interchangeable. In fact, GM warns specifically that one NOT use Dexron-VI in applications requiring JWS3309/T-IV.

In addition, JWS3309/T-IV cannot be used in place of LT71141. The person must've mistakenly assumed that all VW units use the same fluid. VW has four transmissions on the road today, within the last five years.

01M- 4-speed Automatic, uses LT71141 or equivalent (ZF unit)
09A- 5-speed Automatic Tiptronic unit. (Jatco I think) Uses special fluid
09G- 6-speed Automatic, uses JWS3309/T-IV fluid. (Aisin Warner box)
DSG- Uses special DSG fluid and filter. Requires a service every 40k, mandatory.
