We used to produce hydrogen at work to reduce the friction in the generators (yep 60 tonnes spinning at 3,000 RPM inside a tank of pressurised hydrogen).
Sat down and worked out the energy conversion efficiency, then run it at 25% in an IC engine, throw in some leakage (it's slippery stuff)...it's an absolute drubbing.
One day we will learn to photosynthesise in a laboratory. That will be a miracle breakthrough.
Until then, we've got to make fusion work, and put up with our other carbon neutral schemes.
I'm even comfortable with coal to liquid if we can get our electricity without coal.
