the unit i used was a hoosier brand "needle pyrometer". the tip was a sharp spike so it could be inserted into the rubber. it was a slick unit. i was amazed at how hot tires can get!

We use the cheapo Longacre unit (about $70), lazer non-contact type, for our testing purposes on the autocross team. You don't really need exact temperatures to dial in your suspension, just ranges across the inside, center, and outside of the tire surface. Great for dialing in camber!

Practice tomorrow on Concrete, last one before SCCA Solo2 Nationals in Topeka!! Woo Hoo!

For what it's worth, the nat champ drivers in the Chicago/Milwaukee area use the laser type. I've only seen the needle type once in the past 3 years.. and that was by a guy who has been racing longer than I've been alive.
