This is a UOA from my father's 1996 MB E300D. 3L I6 non-turbo diesel engine. Makes about 137hp. Used just about entirely for highway commuting.

He bought it last april or may with about 140k. We changed it over to M1 truck and SUV from whatever the PO's dealer (always dealer serviced) used (maybe M1 0w-40?) We ran it for a short OCI, and now are extending it out. Manuals suggest 7500 mi OCIs.

Looks good to me. I think next time we will do 10k. I think we could do 15k OCIs, but I think Fe may get too high. 10k might be a nice OCI for this engine. Comments???

Soot is very low (0.3%) and TBN is still 10 at 8000. Iron at 27ppm is still pretty low. Try 10k OCI next time and compare. I bet you could go 15k OCI if your driving habits don't change.

I'd change the oil filter @ 7500 miles and sample/change the next batch of oil @ 15,000 miles.

This is a very clean burning older MB w/ low soot levels and a good ring seal. TBN retention shouldn't be an issue at all with this type of highway driving ....

I'd try to keep the Fe < 100 ppm at change out....

Does anyone have comments about his high oxidation and nitration numbers? I figured these would be low with all highway driving.

This lab probably uses an allowable limit of 200 units for oxidation and nitration. So you're @ 40% and 20% of the allowable limit, expressed as a percentage. The stable viscosity would indicate that oxidation isn't a factor in this analysis....
