In April 2004, received an analysis on the 10,373 mile sample showing Abnormal Nickel (36 ppm). Lab retested the sample at my request and it still came out high - 31 ppm. Suggestion was to test new oil fill at 4,000 miles, which I did. While the analysis didn't flag Nickel as Abnormal this time (only 4,063 miles), the trend seems to suggest that Nickel is still a problem and will be Abnormal within the 10,000 mile drain interval (factory, still under warranty).

No modifications have been done to the car.

Other elements also seem to be climbing. Air filter was replaced when this oil change was done, seal appears to be ok.

Help. Before I go to VW to have this recorded while still under warranty, I'd like to know what's going on in my engine. Expert opinions are welcome ! Thanks.

My chart from autospeed on oil analysis says iron, aluminum and chromium are related to piston, rings and cylinders. Nickel is camshafts, followers, valve area. Not sure what to make of this combo. Maybe Nickel is used on your rings or pistions. Terry Dyson analysis is your best bet on this one. His information is on this site I believe. You need his help as you definitly have a problem.

Since this is a warranty issue Terry Dyson is your best option. [email protected]
I think you also have elevated FE and AL. How long does it take you to put 10k on this vehicle?

Yes, I saw the elevated FE and AL also and was concerned about that as well.

It takes 12-14 months to put 10K on the car, I don't use it a lot.

Hiring Terry to interpret your results may be the best $20.00 you could spend. I believe he will interpret using your existing analysis results.

He is a bona-fide expert.

1.) VW says change the oil every 12 months or 10k miles. Be sure to always let the engine warm up. Short, stop and go trips are murder on oil and the engine.

2.) Try using a different lab. I recommend AVlube.

I would hazard a guess that your turbo is self destructing. Probably need Terry's input on this.

VW 505.01 oils are specifically designed to lower camshaft wear. The recent 1.9L Passet requires it I thought (same engine?).

2004 and newer Passat TDI is a 2.0, not a 1.9.

True, all 2004 and newer TDI's require VW 505.01 oils.
