Series 2000 0w30 (gasoline engine oil)with Amsoil BMK11 by-pass filtration system running a BE 100 1.5 quart filter.

Tested 14 June 04 19,700 miles on the oil and 29,700 on the engine. NO FILTER CHANGES.

Analysis recommendations: No corrective action required, oil is suitable for continued use. Resample at next regular interval.

The first number is my sample at 10,000 on the oil and 20,000 on the engine. The last numbers are the current.

  • Iron 54, 89
  • Chrome 5, 2
  • lead 2, 7
  • copper 9, 16
  • tin 0, 0
  • alum 5, 7
  • Nickel 0, 4
  • Silver 0, 0
  • Silicon 7, 11
  • Boron 16, 13
  • sodium 0, 9
  • Magnesium 843, 641
  • calcium 2484, 2383
  • barium 0, 0
  • Phsoshrous 1173, 1146
  • zinc 1359, 1331
  • Moly 0, 3
  • titanium 0, 0
  • Vanadium 0, 0
  • Potasium 0, 0
  • Visc@100 12.40, 12.76
  • solid/soot .45, .82
  • Glycol Neg, Neg
  • Nitr 13.0, 17.0
  • Oxid 15.0, 18.0
  • TBN 8.22, 4.97

Personal comments are that the oil is starting to degrade now, I'll be changing soon.

To prove a point that the 0w30 hold up well in the TDI engine. Is this oil the best for this engine. Probably not but it does work well, especially with a by-pass filter.

My next plan is to try out the 10w40 AMO. In my opinion this is probably the best overall oil for the engine. Unless you live in the extreme north. I'll be moving to Tennesee, so 10w40 will be good year round. Could I run the new 5w40? Sure, but for less money and as good if not better protection the 10w40 wins out on this test. I'll try for 20K on the oil again to keep the comparison even.

Notice the Silicon level in this sample, for 20K on the oil it's pretty darned good. I'm running the Amsoil Oil wetted foam filter with the snow screen removed. I also like the fact that the Vis has changed very little on this sample between 10 and 20K.
Lastly the TBN is cut in half, I would imagine in another 3,000-4,000 it would be in half again. So there is no way to get 30,000 out of this sample without a filter change. I figure if I'm doing a filter change might as well get it all out of there.

I would say a good combo of both. We had a few trips in there but probably mostly my wife driving back and forth to work.

bNote that this is not Amsoil (or mine) recommended oil or oil change interval. I should have done at least 2 filter changes during that time. Also there are better oils to choose from.

Overall I'm happy with the results. I think that some of the wear metals is the engine breaking in. Since I started with this oil change at 10,000 on the engine.

How much make-up over the 20,000 miles?

I don't have the nerve to run that long on a drain

Gives me the creeps knowing my stuff has been in there 5000 miles

Mike,

I'd run the new Amsoil 5w-40 the next time around, mainly because there will be more potential commercial interest - $$$ - from the TDI Forum crowd.

I expect the 5w-40 will work about like the Amsoil 10w-40 in this application, but many folks are hung up on the VW/Audi, SAE 5w-40 recommendation. Sometimes you have to pick your battles ...

The specs on this new Amsoil 5w-40 compare very favorably to Delvac 1, which is clearly the best competitive diesel oil on the market....

Iron is very high. But probably due to the engine still breaking in.

Also I wouldn't think it's a very wise idea to use a gasser oil in a diesel.

For an engine so new, going so long (wouldn't doitmyself) - the Fe is not that high.

Not sure what possessed you to use the 0W-30. I would have gone with the 15W-40 or 5W-30 HDD..........but lookie, no thickening and the oil help up GREAT.
