I'm changing the rear-end fluid in my 99 Crown Victoria with 3.27 non-lock gear. The 2002 Crown Victoria and newer uses 75W-140 synthetic lube. The original spec for mine is non-synthetic 80W-90. My inclination is to use the 75W-140 when I install the Amsoil Severe Gear lube. Anyone have any experience with synthetic lube in the Ford 8.8 in the 1998-2002 Crown Victoria?

How about Redline? Whilst they have a 75-140 fluid you may not need the heavier 140. I suggest you consider the 75w-90 as it is a higher quality oil anyway.

The Amsoil should be fine as well.

While I doubt the Amsoil 75W-90 will cause it to grenade - those buggers do get hot! I would go with the Amsoil SG 75W-140. Good stuff.

BTW - My company makes the fire supression units for the law enforcement Crown Vics....not that the fires are caused by burning diffs....but they do get HOT

Thanks to all that have replied.

As a preventative measure I changed the original 80W-90 lube and installed Mobil 1 75W-90 at about 41K miles. I noticed some gear noise under load with the M1, I did not notice any noise before changing it.
At about 43K miles I changed to Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90, still have some noise when it heats up.
I saw the Motorcraft Chemicals lube chart and noticed that Ford is using 75W-140 synthetic in the Crown Vics so I'm going to try Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-140 next. It is on the way, I will update with results.

Been running the 75W-140 this week and it's definitely quieter. My mileage this week was not significantly worse, > 22 MPG in 99 Crown Vic with combo but mostly city driving. I'm going to keep running the 75W-140.
In 5128 miles my minimum mileage is 19.6 and maximum highway was 25.2 driving 70-80 MPH.

Dlgnnc,

I just saw this post today for the first time.

I had a 99 CV LX and now have a 2002 CV LX sport. Both have the 3:27 open gearand both call for Motorcraft 75W140 synth lube. I ran the old series 2000 75W90 in the 99 for 30,000 miles or so and am now running the sever gear 75W90 in my current car. Both work fine so far.

My 2003 Gran Marquis owners manual calls for an 80w-90 gear lube for the standard differential. The product selection guide on the Amsoil corporate web site shows their synthetic 80w-90 gear lube for the standard differential and the 75-90 severe gear lube and the 80w-90 synthetic for the locking differential. I don't see where a 75w-140 gear lube is specified or recommended in this application. I've been running Amsoil 75w-90 Series 2000 gear lube in my car the last couple of years and haven't had any issues as yet.

A guy know with a SD F350 who runs Severe Gear 75W-90 in his 2004 4x4 truck in place of the 75W-140. Claims many F350 owners are doing that with good results. Trying to eak out at many mpg as they can from thier diesels. Actuall had the Ford dealer put it in there and they never said anything.
