My owners manual specs Mopar MS8985 Full synthetic 75w140 fluid plus 4 oz of friction modifier for my 03 Ram 1500 limited slip rear. I know that Dodge has a habbit of specing oil that is not licensed to other producers (ATF+4) and am wondering if there is something special about the Mopar gear oil.

Every owners manual will say to use their brand (marketing)...some fluids like transmission fluids are VERY important to use the exact part number...but axles no..I was using the Mopar 75W-140 in my rear axles on both my Jeeps till the price got insane...got a great deal on a case of Pennzoil 75W-140 syn ...use it in my 99 XJ and my 01 TJ and my friends 03 TJ Rubicon calls for this weight and type (syn) in both front and rear axles...everything is good to go...people are touting the Redline gear oil on this board...could give that a try.
