I found this buried deep in another thread somewhere, thought it should be reposted as a separate message.

This oil is rated ACEA A3/B3.

My dad's car ('00 528i) uses this oil and the car usually asks for oil changes every 15,000 miles. Boron was 20 ppm the last time I had the oil analyzed. I will pull another sample again soon (another 15K run).

Previous analysis here.

Looks like it didn't thicken up as badly as I initially thought; this stuff starts out pretty thick to begin with.

It's the right link. Blackstone mis-interpreted
the results.

This just goes to show that Mobil 1 is missing
an opportunity by keeping their 30 weight oils
so thin. If they would make all of the 30
weight oils just a little thicker, they would
all meet ACEA A3/B3 HT/HS requirements and
no one here would have any reservations about
using Mobil 1 30 weight oils.

I think the reason why Mobil insists on keeping to the thin side of 30 grade is so that they can make their "energy conserving" and "reduced gas consumption" claims.

Yup, they thought it was a 15W-50--I didn't specify the viscosity when I sent it in, because I didn't know at the time. But it turns out it's a 5W-30. Most people believe it's a Group III, and it probably is, given that it's only $3.80 at most any BMW dealer.

As for Mobil 1, they somehow managed to get the ACEA A3 rating *and* ILSAC GF-3 "energy conserving" status in their 0W-40 oil.

I suppose M1 xW-30 is even _more_ "energy conserving" though?
