I guess time marches on...
This Harley site
web page has the long filter still in stock, and I've also learned that there actually is a short filter for the Evo engines that is recommended by HD. I had incorrectly assumed that all short filters were Twin Cam filters. The filter I got was the 63796-77A which is for the older Evos. Live and learn...
Also, Wix makes chrome filters for the HD's. Here is their model 51225
and here is a link to their motorcycle filter page:

I'll be ordering some chrome Wix filters from my local Napa dealer. The Napa filters are made by Wix, but I don't know if there is a Napa cross-over to chrome. The Napa dealer said that he could order anything Wix makes.
For the Napa equivalent, I'm told to just drop the "5" from in front of the Wix part number. So the Napa HD filter would be 1215, rather than 51215.
Curiously, the same Wix filter that goes on my '93 Ford Escort will work on my HD. It's long, like the long filters I had been using. And the specs are all the same. I actually encountered one guy on the 'net who was using the Walmart SuperTech 3600 filter (same as recommened for my Escort) on his HD. The SuperTechs are decent filters so I'm sure this worked out just fine for him. Except for the color.
Wix has the reputation of making some of the best filters available, so as mentioned, I'm going to "procure" a good source or two for the Wix PN 51225.
Hope this helps...
