I went by the dealership today to pick up an oil filter for my '94 Evo engine...

I've been using the longer filter.

They tell me those have been "discontinued" and I should use the shorty filter that the Twin Cams use.

Anybody heard about HD dropping the long oil filters?

I can't help but think that in the case of oil filters, bigger is better.

Didn't hear anything, I use an older short filter on my XLX, and on my new FXS I use the XXX98-99 (TC88) filter.

I have noticed no one in my area carries the SAE 60 anymore. I wonder if they dropped it. Some of the old guys get me to pick it up for their Flat/Knuck/Pan/Shovels. Also the 10W40 has not been around here in years.

I guess time marches on...

This Harley site web page has the long filter still in stock, and I've also learned that there actually is a short filter for the Evo engines that is recommended by HD. I had incorrectly assumed that all short filters were Twin Cam filters. The filter I got was the 63796-77A which is for the older Evos. Live and learn...

Also, Wix makes chrome filters for the HD's. Here is their model 51225

and here is a link to their motorcycle filter page:

I'll be ordering some chrome Wix filters from my local Napa dealer. The Napa filters are made by Wix, but I don't know if there is a Napa cross-over to chrome. The Napa dealer said that he could order anything Wix makes.

For the Napa equivalent, I'm told to just drop the "5" from in front of the Wix part number. So the Napa HD filter would be 1215, rather than 51215.

Curiously, the same Wix filter that goes on my '93 Ford Escort will work on my HD. It's long, like the long filters I had been using. And the specs are all the same. I actually encountered one guy on the 'net who was using the Walmart SuperTech 3600 filter (same as recommened for my Escort) on his HD. The SuperTechs are decent filters so I'm sure this worked out just fine for him. Except for the color.

Wix has the reputation of making some of the best filters available, so as mentioned, I'm going to "procure" a good source or two for the Wix PN 51225.

Hope this helps...

As far as I know theyre are still making the long filters, or at least the dealer I work at still carries them. We also, just today got some SAE 60 shipped in. So the product is still out there.
