My brother just bought a 04 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O. and was wondering what type of oil to use in it. I figured he should change it with dino oil for the first oil change, and then switch to a synthetic. It will be used in -20F weather during the winter.

Amsoil developed their "4 stroke 0w40" specifically for the polaris application(as well as others) but primarly Polaris.

Won't harm the wet clutch and will protect the engine at -40 to 110 degrees F.

It should come filled with a OW40 synthetic from Polaris. I wouldn't run anything but a synthetic in it (Polaris or Amsoil). I am currently trying the Amsoil 0W40 and it seems to be working good for me. The price for Polaris and Amsoil is the same price at my dealer.

My dealer has both for $5.75 a quart. I've been to other dealers and it is usually around $6.00.
