Those given to you are pretty decent..... middle-tier and that's the type most of the more serious electronic gadget users have. YOU have to evaluate how good-of-one you need. If you have a pile of money invested in that corner of your computer room, then buy a better one. But I use similar to you and my computer desk has total electronics worth 1-2K at-most. So the (roundabout) 4000 joules works fine for me.

If you truly want to protect your equipment get a zerosurge or surgex. If you want to pretend your stuff is protected the Belkin is fine.

If it's free they're fine. The joules rating is like a life bar. Everytime you get a surge joules gets subtracted permanently. Most surge protectors continue to work after the joules rating drops to 0. Some Belkin stuff does well, others are ok. At least they're all UL rated. That's more important to look for since there's too many things you plug into a wall that comes from China. Lots of good info here:

^^^^ That! Excellent post. Except for me personally I would skip the first choice. Im watch my surge suppressors indicator lights and replace them even if still lit after a few years. I dont need a product turning off my stuff when it thinks it needs to get my attention and turning into a useless extension cord. *L* (it maybe good for some though and maybe even provide more protection)
