Acting California Gov. Tom Torlakson has now declared a state of emergency for both major wildfires burning in the state.

The declaration issued Tuesday frees up state resources and temporarily sets aside regulations for the firefight and the recovery.

The fire in Monterey County near Big Sur has burned 20 homes and is threatening a scenic stretch of coastline.

The blaze in Los Angeles County destroyed 18 homes and killed one person.

It is unusually extremely hot in So Cal the last few days.

"BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) - The operator of a bulldozer was killed when it rolled over during the fight against a wildfire near Big Sur that has destroyed 20 homes and spread across more than 36 square miles (93.24 sq. kilometers), California fire officials said Wednesday."

Bummer.

LA County Supervisors are right now debating the purchase of 2 super scoopers for $37M each that are known to be excellent in getting to a fire at the very start no matter how rough the terrain might be. They lease 2 of these planes every year but the lease does not begin until September. Right now the LA County Supervisors are reluctant to make the purchases or move up the start date of the lease. They claim they would have to divert funds from quickly expanding social welfare programs to take care of the growing number of illegals coming across the border. The media is covering the talks to purchase these planes for year around coverage as requested by fire officials but the reasons for not making the purchase and not moving up the lease date are thought to conflict with all the publicity to promote sanctuary cities that invite and protect illegals and streamline the process of obtaining driver's licenses, registering to vote, applying for welfare and getting EBT cards (food stamps) and Social Security disability payments. These activities are very important right now especially with the November election coming.

Woo, boy. Big Alex Jones fan are ya? Got a radio that tunes that fancy new FM band? Maybe some supporting evidence?

... and of course the Martin (Hawaii) Mars is at the Oshkosh air show trying to drum up interest in buying it, because it didn't get any firefighting contracts this year. :-(

We were at the meeting. Sorry, no recordings are allowed or pictures unless you have a media credential.

that planes operating costs make it a fail.

This though early in the season sounds like the usual California wild fire season. Knock on wood up here is so far so good.

Why, so you can insult them on social media, possibly jeopardizing their careers?

Until your house is in the path of a wildfire. Scoop-on-the-fly water tankers can put more gallons on a fire per hour than any other method, if there's a large enough lake nearby. I was working near Paso Robles maybe 10 years ago, and the Mars was working a fire off toward the northwest. We could see it on the horizon, heading in to Lake Nacimiento several times an hour. Yes, maintaining 70 year old machinery is costly, but in this case its literally the only thing with so much capability. The Electra water-bombers are great and can put down more retardant *per load*, easier to maintain, etc.... and so is the KC-10. But they have to fly to an airport, enter the pattern, put gear down, land, taxi, hook up hoses, pump, disconnect hoses, taxi, get cearance, take off, and return to the fire for every load. The KC-10 was flown in to our area for the Bastrop Complex Fire in 2011, but never got to make a single drop because it took so long to get its infrastructure set up at the airport. By then, all the trees, the state park, and subdivisions were gone. :-/
