In the oils department there are a lot of people here with a higher breadth of knowledge than I. Does anyone know a dexos oil with a 100° viscosity thicker than Mobil 1's? I think it's 11.1?

The Conoco Phillips products, Phillips Shield Valor and Kendall GT-1 both offer full synthetic 5W30 (SN, GF-5, dexos1) that have the same KV100 at 11.1 cSt. You get a slightly higher HTHS of 3.1 cP with the Kendall GT-1 (over the Phillips Shield) for the same KV100, so that would be my pick of those two.

Kendall GT-1 Dexos Spec Sheet

However, the full synthetic Castrol Edge High Mileage 5W30 (SN, GF-5, dexos1, A1/B1) has a KV100 of 11.3 cSt (no HTHS listed).

According to this web page, M1 5W30 (SN, GF-5, dexos1, A1/B1) has a kV40 of 61.7 cSt, a KV100 of 11.0 cSt, and a HTHS os 3.1 cP.

So the Kendall GT-1 is thicker with a KV100 = 11.1 cSt and a KV40 = 63 cSt, but they both have the same HTHS of 3.1 cP. To my mind this makes the M1 "better" with a lower VII load.

The Edge HM 5W30 has KV40 = 67.2 and KV100 = 11.3, it doesn't list HTHS, but I would be surprised if it wasn't at least 3.1 cP and maybe 3.2cP

M1 HM 5W30 (SL, A1/B1) isn't dexos, but it's a high zinc, high quality synthetic with KV40 = 69.2 cSt, KV100 = 11.7 cSt and HTHS = 3.3 cP ( M1 HM Web Page) )

All good stuff, but the Edge HM 5W30 has caught my eye.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm hoping a thicker oil will help with lifter tick in 4.8 GM truck engine (the one in the signature). I have always used Mobil 1 5w30. Maybe a little thicker will help?

I have never used a smoother or maybe I should say quieter oil in my 2013 Mustang GT then Castrol GTX Magnatec esp at start up.

It may help, but the tick will still be there whether you can hear it or not, thicker oil won't make your problems go away. Lifters are easy and inexpensive to maintain. Why not just get it fixed?

I thought I had maintained it! It has 70k miles with only Mobil 1 5w30 ever used. Religious about oil changes.

And just to add a few more data points :
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W30
has KV100 = 10.3 cSt

Valvoline SynPower 5W30
has KV100 = 10.7 cSt

Sinclair Full Synthetic 5W30 dexos
has KV100 = 10.93 cSt

The others in order are
M1 5W30 = 11.0
Kendall GT-1 = 11.1
Castrol Magnatec = 11.2
Castrol Edge HM = 11.3

They are all 5W30 SN, GF-5, Dexos1 oils

Titan GT1 Pro-Flex has a Kinematic Viscosity at 100C of 11.8.

That's a ACEA C3, Dexos2 diesel / lower SAPS engine oil.

I believe the OP wants a Dexos1 petrol engine oil.

Of course with low sulphur fuel you can use C3 oil in PCMO applications, but it more like a low (or mid) SAPS version of an A3/B4 oil. Nothing like a GF-5 RC oil, which is the starting spec for a Dexos1 oil.

Is there a HTHS limit on 5w30 dexos? The highest I found is 3.3 with a KV100C of 11.
I found a mono-grade SAE30 with KV100C 11.0 and HTHS 3.50.

Yeah, I don't believe them either NovaDude. A Dexos1 oil is also GF-5 and I can't see it passing the fuel economy requirements.

Looking at Lubrizol they give minimum HTHS requirements and maximum Sulphated Ash requirements for the Dexos standards
Dexos1 HTHS >= 2.9 and SA Dexos2 HTHS >= 3.5 and SA <= 0.8
