Asking this question on behalf of a friend with an early 70's Winnebago with a Dodge 318. I don't know the technical name for the automatic transmission it has, but the manual calls for Dexron (I guess you'd call this Dex I).

What would be an appropriate modern fluid to replace this with?

Torqueflite 727.

Given the application, I'd go Type-F for firmer/quicker shifting...artificially creating somewhat of a tow/haul mode via fluid selection.

I miss the 318 V8 and the TorqueFlite 727 !!!!

Stuck with a bad run of GM 4T65E trannies! Gawd, I can't believe after all this time GM still rips us off.

I drove many 318s with 727s for over 25 years, 520,000 miles (836,000 Kms) with no tranny problems! GM? a nightmare!

Had a 79' PowerWagon for 17 years - that power train (+some bolt on HP) ...
Still running strong when I sold it ...

Any Dex Merc blend.

If you feel very fancy, throw some Valvoline Maxlife in it. My 30 year old 2004R loves the stuff. Fixed the output shaft seal leak in it also.

Did the Winnebagos have the car/pickup 318, or the 318 truck motor?

*This has nothing to do with what ATF to use. I'm just curious.
